Vanessa wanted to get her senior portrait photos done in Capitola – there’s so many types of locations all within walking distance: railroad tracks, murals, train trestle, bridge, river, dirt pathways, under the wharf, and of course the beach itself. This is a natural light-only session (not my typical method), but it was fun, spontaneous, and I feel like I was able to rule capture Vanessa’s genuine spirit and nature. Darcey, Andrew and Kids (Family Photography) @ Lighthouse Field, Santa Cruz, California

This was my second family portrait session in as many years with Darcey, Drew, and their adorable blondie offspring. They loved their photos at Lighthouse Field and Dog Beach so much from the first shoot, they decided to go to the same location again this year. These guys have a lot of fun with each other, and are very creative, easygoing and lighthearted. I mean, who picks up seaweed and starts a vigorous game of jump rope with their kids? How many young siblings can wrap their arms around each other and smile at the camera without it quickly turning into a fight? Not many, I can tell you that… Photographing this family is not work – it’s pure fun and joy.

About This Post: After our first yoga portrait session at Private’s beach, Danielle had a better idea of what kind of photos she wanted to get. Instead of shooting at dawn with lighting equipment, I suggested a sunset session at Panther Beach for a natural light session. Less setup, more spontaneous and, well, natural. We had some pretty epic weather – calm wind, blue seas, and lovely golden light. We made the best of it, check out some of my favorite photos below:

Ichi Sushi (Architecture Photography) @ San Francisco, California

For this architectural interior photo shoot at ICHI Sushi, I had to arrive well after closing time so the place could be cleaned up and made photo ready. The main reason for this is because the main windows to the street bring in a lot of natural light, but not so much that the interior would be well lit with that alone. And mixing outdoor light with all those interior incandescents is a photographer’s nightmare of white balance issues. So, these photos were taken around midnight, when the place was lit solely by interior lights. I like to shoot wide panoramic interiors that show off the architecture and materials of any given space. Here’s a few of my favorites:

Molly and Jay (Wedding Photography) @ The Dream Inn, Santa Cruz,California

I first met this midwest couple for their Capitola engagement shoot, we had such a blast for those two hours, I knew the big day was going to be filled with fun. The first of November came with ominous clouds that threatened rain – but the likelihood of sprinkles didn’t wipe that infectious grin off Molly’s face! No, even when some bag-lady absconded with the bride’s glittery flip-flops while we were off taking pictures – nothing was going to get in the way of the perfect day. And so it was. Rain turned into full rainbows at the ceremony; Jay rescued the flip-flops from the confused bag lady. The sun came out and shone on this beautiful couple and their wedding day, showing the path to their bright future together. Corny, I know – but that’s how it played out. The Dream Inn hosted Molly and Jay’s Santa Cruz destination wedding with their usual efficiency and attention to detail. This was my last wedding of the season, and it couldn’t have ended on a better note. Congrats you two – now go make some babies!

Jackie and Preston (Engagement Photography) @ Hidden Villa, Los Altos, California

These two were in town from Dallas, TX getting some wedding stuff done; we originally met up just to chat about their wedding and how I could potentially fit in to their big day. We had about 20 minutes of broad strokes discussion about their Mission Santa Clara wedding, but ultimately we decided to just go out and have an impromptu engagement session. Originally Jackie was thinking West Wind Barn, but I suggested Hidden Villa as I thought would have more environmental opportunities – it is just a much larger space, with dramatic open areas, majestic oak trees and hidden pathways through the forest. I also knew from our brief discussion (and reviewing a few “liked” Pinterest photos) that Jackie was mostly interested in a natural-light only session. I tend to extensively use off-camera strobes in my engagement shoots, but it’s nice to go back to my natural light roots from time to time – it’s definitely “easier” and more spontaneous. We got some nice golden-hour backlit shots as we explored the property together, and I feel the photos are intimate, but not all kissy-kissy, which is exactly what we were going for.

Courtney and Robert (Engagement Photography) @ Natural Bridges, Santa Cruz, California

Courtney and Robert are planning on getting married this later in Alabama, but they wanted their engagement shoot (and save-the-dates) to give everyone a slice of what California has to offer – natural beauty in spades of course! Natural Bridges in Santa Cruz is a popular destination; it’s got different types of forests, open fields, small ponds and of course the beach with the iconic natural bridge just offshore. When I met up with these two at the rear entrance, I knew they would photograph well, and after a little posing boot camp they’d feel at ease and be having fun in no time. They brought a bunch of outfit changes, but we ended up sticking with two – one for the forest/field settings, and one for the beach. The weather was ideal and our timing was perfect, ending the session with a gorgeous sunset. Although I’m bummed I won’t be there for their big day, I know they’ll treasure these photos for years to come.

Hawthorn Lounge (Architecture Photography) @ San Francisco, California

From the unlabeled, nondescript gray door entrance on Geary, you’d never know there was an epic underground lounge waiting 2 minutes from the sidewalk. Although I photographed the interiors on off-hours, when Hawthorn Lounge was closed, I could really appreciate the lavish decor, dark (yet brilliant) ambience, and the spare-no-expense sound system and general details. The Oberholtzers (Family Photography) @ Round Valley Regional Preserve, Brentwood, California

Shooting multiple generation families over the holidays can be a daunting task. The most challenging part is honestly the logistics of getting everyone together – especially with people flying in and out at different times. And of course the idea of a big family shoot is usually exhausting – getting the kids fed, dressed and happy can leave any parent stressed and grumpy. I do my best to make the family portrait process fun, easy, and relatively quick. I always start with the hardest shots – the whole family as one large group – when everyone is fresh. After that, I work with individual families while the others can take a break and let the kids run around.

Being from Washington state, this family is full of die-hard Seahawks fans, so after we got the more formal mass group photo done, everyone donned their Seahawks garb for some fun group shots showing off their favorite sports team – with Grandpa’s (ahem) colorful shirt being the center of attention. He was damn proud of that shirt…

In between posed group shots I took fun candid shots of the family just being themselves. I believe it’s important to have a balanced mix of posed/directed and candid shots from every shoot. Lillian’s Italian Kitchen (Food Photography) @ Santa Cruz, California

Lillian’s Italian Kitchen is one of those rare gems of a restaurant – family-owned, immensely popular, and probably benefitting from never really growing bigger. The restaurant itself is really small, really only enough room for maybe 25 people at a time. So it’s not unusual to show up and see a crowd of people outside on the Sequel sidewalk waiting for their turn for delicious pasta yumminess. Enjoy a few photos of the chef and his dishes below.

Stevie, Angelo and Anna (Family / Maternity Photography) @ Covered Bridge Park, Felton, California

I photographed their wedding 7 months ago, and today I had the privilege to shoot Stevie and Angelo’s maternity session. Angelo’s adorable daughter, Anna, joined us to make it a family shoot as well. We met at Covered Bridge park in Felton and explored the area. The light was perfect, and the day was almost too warm to be winter. With the recent rains, every plant that wasn’t dormant for the winter was bursting with green. The jewel of the park is also its namesake – the covered bridge has lots of photo opportunities, from wide angles showing off the rafters, to creative use of the spaced out windows over the creek. Beyond the bridge is a green meadow, which used to be home to a community garden. It’s gone now, but it’s a beautiful space to shoot at, especially later in the day. Best Of: Business Portrait Photography

I shoot quite a few portraits (both group and individual) for commercial / business-use every year. People’s requirements are diverse – sometimes it’s a corporate headshot with strict guidelines for lighting, pose and background; other times my client wants something casual, perhaps at their home – but still taken with a professional and creative eye. One of the things that makes my business portrait photography service unique is that I conveniently come to you! No need to come to a studio – I can meet you at your home, your office, or some outdoor location for a more natural setting. I’ve yet to come to a place that I couldn’t take great photos at. The photos you see below were all shot on-location, mostly enhanced by lighting equipment I bring with me (as opposed to natural/ambient-only lighting). Cassandra and Trevor (Engagement Photography) @ Nisene Marks Forest, Aptos, California

Cassandra and Trevor are tying the knot in 2016, but booked me a couple years in advance to make sure they got the date they wanted! They love the forest, especially the lush greenery found in the ferns and moss in the redwoods of Nisene Marks State Park in Aptos, California. This couple has a natural ease with each other – and once they got over that pesky camera guy hiding behind trees and under ferns, they really warmed up to their romantic engagement shoot in the forest. It was great spending time with them, especially since I probably won’t see them for another 16 months or so 🙁

I love the ambience, the natural light down by the creek. Cassandra and Trevor were exploring along the river’s edge when I caught this candid moment.

Nice color and depth to the forest, romantic kissing moment.

Cassandra is so playful, they both just wanted to frolick around the redwoods all day!

These two fit so well together, you can feel the love!

I don’t usually edit forest photos in black and white, but some of these worked really well I think.

I love the receding pathway through the forest.

The backlit, moss-covered trees looked so cool here. Also, shooting through the ferns is fun!

The couple braved standing on some rocks in the creek so I could get some reflection shots.

Getting some cool shots of the rings in a hole of this redwood tree – I love the green moss.

Stacey + John (Family Photography) @ Natural Bridges Beach, Santa Cruz, California

Stacey and John wanted their family portraits taken at Natural Bridges State Beach this year – an extremely popular location given the variety of locations (forest, field, beach). Their son, Charlie, was really great to work with – he surprised all of us with some of his “little man” poses! We got lots of posed and candid shots over the course of an hour, and even experienced one of the super-low tides, which meant we could explore the natural bridge (and all the sea creatures clinging to it) – I can only remember one other time I was able to do this.

Below are some of my favorite photos from the family photography session, laid out album spread-style. Enjoy!

Custom Chandelier Design (Product Photography) @ Santa Cruz, California

Eric and Theresa are past wedding and newborn/family portraits of mine, and this shoot was for Theresa’s side of the family. We decided on Capitola Beach for the portrait session, mostly because of the mellow waves and easy accessibility for the little ones. I’m really happy how the photos turned out, everyone had a great time. I’m sure they’ll cherish these photos forever.
