Usually engagement sessions are casual – comfy clothes for a relaxed first shoot with your photographer. But as is too often the case, the bridal portrait part of a wedding day gets squished into a 5 to 15 minute window that is never enough time to get what everyone wants – killer, creative and amazing photos of the bride and groom. So some couples, like Vivan and Patrick here, opt to turn their engagement session into a full-on bridal portrait session with rented gown, tux and even a bouquet! I absolutely love the idea, and they couldn’t have picked a more grand location than the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. It’s got towering Roman columns and arches that make you feel like you’re walking through Rome itself. The second half of the area is dominated by a lovely pond with shooting water fountains, rolling grass hills and picturesque trees dotting the landscape. We garnered more than our fair share of attention during the shoot, but Vivan and Patrick didn’t care in the least. We had an awesome time exploring the photographic possibilities, and even getting a little risqué with some intimate posing. I am looking forward to the *real* big day coming up later this year.

Wow, well after their romantic San Francisco engagement session, I was really pumped for my first wedding of the 2015 season with Rachel and Jonathan. Their full Jewish wedding celebration took place at the always gorgeous Casa Real @ Ruby Hill Winery in Pleasanton, California. And since this was a February wedding, rain was planned for – and indeed it came. Luckily the vast majority of the festivities were planned to take place in the spacious indoors this venue offers. My right-hand man Sam Fontejon had my back with his second-shooter skills, and I was glad to have it with this 200 person wedding. Lots of smiling faces and fleeting moments to capture!

If lil’ pup Sophie had her way, she’d have stolen the show at Bethany and Eric’s sweet engagement at Pfeiffer Beach, Big Sur, California. However, Bethany’s parents were kind enough to dog-sit while the rest of us humans explored the nooks and crannies of the forest and beach. Being President’s Day and all, there were quite a few tourists milling about, so I knew it was going to be a challenge making it feel like we were the only ones there. But because it was an overcast day, I left my lighting gear in the car so we could be more spontaneous and creative with the compositions (easier to minimize background photo bombers!).
The one challenge I knew we would have going into this was the not insignificant height difference between these two. You can guess which sport Eric used to play… However if you know me, you know I always embrace a challenge, so I took every opportunity to use the environment to Bethany’s favor. But sometimes it was fun to embrace the height difference as well. We got a great variety of photos during the shoot, and absolutely had a blast hanging out together. I am really looking forward to their Carmel wedding this fall.

Patti and Jodi are long-time friends with the owners of Windy Oaks winery in Corralitos, CA – so even though they don’t host a large number of weddings on their property, they opened up the vineyard to their friends. Since same-sex weddings have become legal in California, I’ve had the honor to capture a few (and am looking forward to many more); the emotions that rise to the surface, the longing to finally, publicly make the union official – it’s such an amazing experience to witness. Young twenty-somethings may know love, but a couple who has been together for 20+ years without being able to formalize their love in front of family and friends – that is something to behold. As I listened to story after story from Patti and Jodi’s friends, I had to put my sunglasses on to hide the tears welling in my eyes. Congratulations ladies, thank you for letting me capture it.

Casa Real at Ruby Hill Winery is an excellent venue, especially for larger weddings that still want the vineyard feel. The interior rooms are very high-ceilinged and expansive, easy for decorators and designers to dress up to even the most discerning bride’s taste. Lynda and John had a mellow beginning to the wedding – the guys hitting up Legends Barbershop in Milpitas for a nice, close shave; the girls got to hang out in the comfort of Lynda’s house. The day went by in a blur, but the ceremony in the outdoor courtyard was simply gorgeous, and the reception was an absolute blast! My favorite part was taking the couple out to the vineyard at sunset – it was positively gorgeous hues of red, orange, purple – well, see for yourself below!

Byington Winery Los Gatos is an excellent venue for couples that want to have an intimate hilltop vineyard wedding. I first worked with Agnieszka and Peter for their San Francisco city streets-themed engagement session, so it was nice to photograph them in a completely different environment – giving them lots of variety in their couples portraits. Byington has lots of great locations to shoot at – the hilltop vineyards, the wine cellar, the second story patio, and plenty of other nooks provide intimate settings. Below are some of my favorite photos – enjoy!

Alicia and Chris are planning on getting married at The Bridges Golf Course in July, but first we had to have an awesome engagement session for save-the-dates, and for great practice of course! We held the e-session in Capitola, hitting up the city streets, railroad tracks, underpass, river, bridge, and other cool spots before finishing up with some epic photos under the wharf on the beach. It was overcast and even a little misty, so we went straight natural light for this shoot – keeping it spontaneous without the extra lighting equipment. I had a lot of fun with these two, and can’t wait for their wedding in July!

Usually Panther Beach is where I shoot romantic engagement sessions – mostly because it’s hard to find, and even harder to get down to the beach (requires some precarious climbing). But this family fell in love with the natural beauty of the location, especially after seeing previous photo sessions I’d had there. Monica and Harley’s daughters we;re so adorable in their bold blue and pink dresses – you can tell they play together more than they fight! We got a lot of great natural light shots while exploring the beach and natural bridge there.

I know family portrait sessions can be stressful – especially when you’ve got three kids under 6 – but I pride myself in being able to get great photos no matter how wild and crazy your kids are. For this Menlo Park family session at a private residence, I simply let the kids run wild for the first half of the shoot – giving them minor direction here and there but having fun with it. They hung from trees, swung on the swings, played on the slide, kicked the soccer ball around, and ran around like…kids! I know this wasn’t what mom and dad expected, but I assured them that all was good. Later, I dragged the outdoor poolside couch onto the lawn and decided to get some family couch cuddle shots – but staying outdoors. The kids loved this of course, and even though they never really calmed down, we still got some great family photos.

It’s been great to see this family grow over the years, these two sisters are SO adorable and have that unbreakable sister bond. I’m sure they have their moments, but for this shoot they were all loves and giggles. We decided to hit up the always lovely Palace of Fine Arts for their San Francisco family portrait session. This location has some wonderful features – a large pond (with ducks and geese), amazing grand architecture – towering columns and arches, and grassy lawns and trees. It’s no wonder I always see other photographers there – pretty much every time I’m there! Luckily the weather was perfect, no strong winds (which can be an issue so close to the bay). Overall we got a great mix of the whole family and the girls on their own.

It’s not too often I get the chance to photograph a man getting down on bended knee and proposing to his girlfriend. Perhaps it’s because us guys usually aren’t as sentimental, perhaps we’re not the best planners – but every once in a while I’ll get a guy that really wants this moment captured, and I am always honored to help in the planning and preparations. Joe relied on my familiarity with Panther Beach and my knowledge of sun direction, tides and lighting to make sure I would be able to get the shots he envisioned. There’s always uncontrolled variables – like weather, other people at the beach, and the fact that we had to conceal the plans from Lacie. A few diagrammed satellite screenshots and a dozen emails later, we’d set the stage for the proposal. I got a last-minute text from Joe with their descriptions, which is good because there were a lot of couples at the beach and I didn’t want to stalk the wrong people!
Luckily I spotted them early, and was able to hang back about 30′ and pretend to take photos of waves while surreptitiously observing things in my periphery. Honestly, the longer they sat there, arms around each other and looking at the ocean while chatting, the more my own anticipation for the moment grew. I can only imagine what Joe was experiencing, trying to figure out when the moment was right. Luckily, he waited for people in the background to walk away before he made the grand gesture – and I was ready. I swung my camera around towards them, no longer worrying about Lacie noticing me, as 100% of her attention was focused on Joe, down on one knee, asking for her hand in marriage. Lacie’s face was priceless – sheer joy and OHMYGODOHMYGOD disbelief. About ten feet behind me, three ladies noticed what was happening – “Oh my gosh you guys I think he’s proposing OHMYGOD I’m gonna cry look he’s down on his knee I can’t believe this is happening this is so awesome…” I had a perma-grin on my face as I snapped away, knowing I was getting exactly what we’d intended. After a few minutes I walked up to the newly engaged couple, introduced myself with congratulations, and proceeded to guide them through an impromptu engagement shoot around the beach, ending with a beautiful sunset.

I was hired to shoot architectural interior and exterior photos of Fogo de Chao’s newest location at Santana Row in San Jose, California. There are several challenges to this spot – it’s on a high traffic location (both foot traffic from the mall and cars from the main roads), it has a stoplight and streetlight right in front of it, and the way the building is oriented – both dawn and sunset shoots don’t provide ideal lighting. I ended up shooting at dawn on two different locations, mostly to minimize the foot and car traffic. Shooting a large building without room to back also presents challenges (without using a distorting wide angle lens) – which means using a specialty architecture lens like my trusty 24mm tilt/shift Nikon. I love that lens, and I use it for all my architecture shoots.

The photos below are from a multi-day shoot with Sundance the Steakhouse – the goal being to create a revamped website for the restaurant with lots of killer, fresh visual content. Over the course of three separate shoots, we shoot plated dishes, portraits of owners Galen and Aaron, photos of the staff, behind-the-scenes action in the kitchen, cocktails and wine, bar action, and many details around the iconic Palo Alto restaurant. I was honored to be asked by Mary and Jackie to not only photograph their elegant wedding, but to cover their private San Jose courthouse elopement and subsequent casual engagement in downtown Los Gatos – one of their favorite haunts. These two ladies share a passion for each other that any couple would envy. When they’re holding hands, the world is in balance and at peace. Partners for many years, and finally able to make it official in the State of California, I am so excited to bear witness to their union. After the not-so-surprisingly simple affair at the courthouse, we headed to Los Gatos to visit their favorite shops – Los Gatos Coffee Brewing Company, the Main St. park, Sips & Sweets Cafe, Azadeh (where their custom wedding gowns were designed), and Old Town Los Gatos.

Gabriella Cafe is a romantic little cafe off the main thoroughfare of downtown Santa Cruz, perfect for intimate dinners for food and wine lovers. It’s understated decor doesn’t scream at you from the sidewalk, so if it weren’t for the entrancing odors wafting out, it would be easy to pass by without notice. But those delicious smells are there, and I encourage you to duck in and have a look at the menu. If nothing else, try the amazing brussels sprouts appetizer – it is… so good. Most engagement sessions happen months – if not a year – before the actual wedding day. But more and more often, my wedding clients are not local – East coast or out of state is pretty typical these days. So there’s not always a ton of opportunities to set up engagement sessions before the wedding. For Laura and Kevin, we ended up shooting a bridal portrait / engagement session two days before their wedding. They knew the day-of was going to be crazy, and often the bride and groom portraits get rushed or there simply isn’t enough time to get a big variety of shots. It was really nice to spend two hours with these two, exploring different spots in the Point Lobos area south of Carmel. It’s a beautiful combination of forested areas and rocky coastline. And they were right – the wedding day was crazy and I’m so glad we had this time together to take some timeless portraits they’ll enjoy for years to come.

It has been a couple years since my last family portrait session with Chandra, Jason, Ahnise and Sterling. Last time we shot at Wilder Ranch, this year we went for a more traditional Santa Cruz beach session. They bring their adorable bundle of fur to Blacks Beach, so we met there about an hour before sunset for a natural light session. It’s so fun seeing the kids grow between portrait sessions – Sterling was all about jumping off high ledges, and Ahnise is turning into a beautiful young lady. We had a lot of fun running around the beach, basking in the golden sunlight on a perfect Santa Cruz evening.
