Whenever I shoot family portraits at Pajaro Dunes in Watsonville, it’s usually a multi-family affair of three generations – grandma & grandpa at the apex along with their adult kids and respective families. I always try to shoot the large group photo first, especially when there’s little kids involved. You never know when they’ll break down and be done with the shoot. For this family portrait session, we got some great shots of everyone as well as a cousins shot and all the different groupings you can think of. It was an overcast morning on the beach, but I still brought my off-camera lighting gear for the smaller group shots – I find it is more flattering for everyone’s faces when I can control the light and shadow. But the candids and wide shots were 100% natural.
Below are some of my favorite photos from the family photography session, laid out album spread-style. Enjoy!

Natural Bridges is one of those rare locations that has it all – grassy fields, oak, pine and sycamore groves, a mossy pond, monarch butterflies, and of course a beautiful beach with an iconic natural bridge. I met up with Lisa and Chris for their engagement – and since they booked my services without ever meeting me in person, it was great to get to know them both a little over the next two hours. I’ll be honest – it was overcast and in the high 50s. Not ideal conditions by any stretch of the imagination. But my shoots have always been couple-focused, and my goal is to make them look their best, no matter what. Plus, they drove all the way from Sacramento – we were gonna make it happen!
And so we did. Lisa and Chris were really easy to work with, following my lead and building on their natural chemistry together. Even though we didn’t get a sunset or warm sand to sink our feet into, we got some great memories captured for posterity – and some great practice in front of the camera.
Enjoy my favorite photos below – and please feel free to leave a comment or share!

With a little coaching and a couple shots of tequila (I jest…), you can get results just like all the other “normal” non-model people you see here. I’ve been shooting engaged couples for quite a few years, and I absolutely love it. Cafe Cruz in Soquel wanted to show off their awesome romantic ambiance – different areas inside and out on the patio that are all next to open fireplaces or fire pits. They certainly add a lot of figurative and literal warmth to the locale. Here’s a few photos highlighting the spaces with some couples.

JoAnne and Fred were officially married a year ago – but that was more of a civil ceremony with very few people present. Since then, they’ve had a few larger celebrations in various countries/locations, due to the spread out nature of their families. Today, though, was their biggest (and last) wedding celebration held at Colcannon Vineyard in Livermore, California. For all intents and purposes, it was a full wedding. The only difference was instead of a ceremony, they stood in the reception hall and read some personal vows to each other – which was actually really neat; short, but meaningful.
We started out the day with a first look along one of the vineyard’s nice-looking hallways. It was 1pm and sunny, so I really didn’t want to shoot it in the full sun. Plus, JoAnne’s dress has lots of tulle, so walking down a vineyard path (as we later discovered) turned her dress into a branch and weed magnet – yuk! We still went out into the vineyard for some posed bridal formals, but I used lighting gear to balance with the sun to get some pretty great shots.
The reception was held inside the main room which is lined by walls of wine barrels, with a separate cocktail hour area lined with enormous, tall barrels. Market lights strung across the reception hall created a magical ambience to the entire space. It definitely called for some extra off-camera lights for photography purposes, which of course I had!
JoAnne and Fred’s families and friends were a lot of fun to hang out with and photograph – definitely lots of group shots!
Below are some of my favorite photos – enjoy!

Senior portraits are always a lot of fun – only one subject to concentrate on, and it’s pretty unlikely they’ll be uncooperative – with streaming tears, snotty noses and throwing fits on the ground 🙂 Jacob did an awesome job, although I must admit he was a challenging nut to crack – this guy just doesn’t smile for the camera easily. Over the course of an hour walking around Capitola, I’m pretty sure I coaxed a few natural smiles out of him. Here’s a few of my faves!

These are some of the best photos from a multi-day photo shoot at the fine restaurant MacArthur Park in Palo Alto. We had an aggressive list of objectives for the photography – to be used for marketing (print and web), advertising and general promotion. We shot some great BBQ food dishes (their specialty) – both by themselves and with people/hands. We also shot lifestyle portraits of customers enjoying themselves – at the bar and at the dining tables. I’ll describe the photos in more detail below – enjoy!
Chefs in the kitchen spreading BBQ sauce on ribs and roasting colorful red and green peppers
Lighter food dishes – salads and fish
Pork and beef dishes with beer
Desserts – mud pie, pecan pie, and a scone with whipped cream and fresh berries
Bartender pouring a martini and a couple women laughing and enjoying their drinks at the bar
Chef Faz poses for a candid portrait in front of some large green palm leaves
Table touch – Chef Faz greets four guests dining near the roaring fireplace, seeing how their dinner is going and just chatting
Steak and asparagus with bread and wine with fireplace adding orange glow to the background – hero shot!

This was originally slated to be a typical family portrait session – you know – mom, dad, kid. About 30 seconds in it was apparent that this was going to be the Addy show, and mom and dad were relegated to “handlers,” making sure our little energetic one didn’t go swimming with the swan, photobomb other families, or attempt to walk into someone’s house. It’s a good thing she’s adorable as hell.
Mom brought three dresses that we could chase Addy around in, my favorite was that pink number. I mean, look at it!
Because Addy likes to be on the move, I abandoned my lighting gear and went full natural light only. And a fast shutter speed because that girl can move! My focusing skills were put to the test, and I’ll admit she bested me 2 out of 3, but I was playing a numbers game and after an hour or so got quite a few keepers. I love Addy. I love her family. Until next time… enjoy these few pics.

So, part II of our first portrait session with VIB Law – this time we met up at the Old Courthouse in downtown San Jose, California. It’s old, but with a grand stature and decor that’s absent in modern architecture.
First we took a few photos in the courtroom itself, but absent a judge, jury and audience we stuck mostly to detail work.
In the lobby outside the courtroom I did a few group “carousel” photos, with each partner taking turn up front.
I really like this shot, using the columned facade of the courthouse to dramatic effect.
Now back to the home office – lifestyle candid shots in the conference room. Check out those expressive hands 🙂

Monica and Kevin wanted to start their engagement shoot near a special place to them among the redwoods in Felton. We explored small groves of trees, wandered along the railroad tracks, and even ventured out over a couple bridges. Most of the shoot, however, was spent among the perennial beauty of Natural Bridges State Park in Santa Cruz. If you park at the rear entrance, you’ll be rewarded by the forests and fields that few people know about. There are many types of trees and grasses that claim this place as their home, and no better romantic setting for engagement portraits. And speaking of natural beauty, Monica looks amazing cradled in the arms of her handsome beau, Kevin. With a little direction from me, and a lot of chemistry they already possess, we made some timeless, intimate photos together. I can’t wait for their wedding coming up in a few weeks!

The fearless and highly skilled triad of leadership at VIB are revamping their website, and need some quality content to help populate the beautiful new design. Having worked together before, the talented fellows at WebDogs recommended VIB give me a call to help fill out the content vacuum. The goals for the initial shoot were pretty simple – headshots of each of the law firm’s partners and a few group photos. I used the building lobby downstairs for the individual portraits – a wood-paneled column in the middle of the lobby served as a nice, lawyer-ly backdrop for the individuals, but wasn’t wide enough for the whole group. For that, we ventured up to the VIB lobby,
As you can see from my phone capture, the ambient lighting situation was pretty challenging. Also, the plastic VIB letters on the facing wall are highly reflective, meaning I had to do some ninja light bouncing with my key light (that big Profoto softbox) to avoid seeing a big white circle in the VIB signage. It’s hard to see, but I also have to speed lights clamped to the window molding on both sides of the room at head-height. These are optically triggered by the ProFoto and are serving to bring up the ambient light in the lobby space behind the group, but without illuminating them directly. Thinking on my feet in situations like this is half the fun!

It can be really hard picking a specific location for an engagement – I mean, what one spot encompasses all that you love as a couple? Are you beach people or more into romping through the forest? Love the busy city streets of San Francisco, or a casual stroll through downtown Los Gatos? So many options, so little time. So it is that this *lovely* couple Laurel and Brian here opted for the variety of natural and man-made beauty that Capitola has to offer. Let’s see, we’ve got murals, railroad tracks, a (tiny) forest, rickety train trestle (not for the aerophobics!), another bridge and a river, cute, colorful buildings, a cool downtown – and oh yeah, a KILLER beach with mellow waves, a picturesque wharf and cliffs. I mean, why would you want to shoot anywhere else?
We took full advantage of all this location has to offer – Laurel was looking amazing in her two outfits, classy in those platforms but still able to deftly navigate the sometimes perilous trails I took them on. Brian is also a handsome dude, easy to smile and clearly head-over-heels for his fiancé. I had a wonderful time coaching them through the process of becoming America’s next top models (ha!). They were super easy to work with, receptive to my directions – and just overall fun to hang out with. Can’t wait for their wedding coming up soon!

Whenever I shoot a wedding at Santa Catalina High School in Monterey, the couple almost always has an intimate connection to the location – either they went to the school or the church (or both). With turn-of-the-century Spanish mission-style architecture, quaint gardens, colorful murals and intimate niches spread throughout, it’s a great venue for post-ceremony bridal portraits. Because it’s an old location, many of the interior locations (bridal suite, church) are pretty dark, but a little preparation on my part (fast lenses / off-camera lighting gear) takes care of these obstacles with nary a hiccup.
Michelle and Stefan’s full mass ceremony gave me plenty of photo ops, and they included enough time in the itinerary to make a pit-stop at Stewart’s Cove Beach in Carmel for some nice bridal portraits before heading to Stefan’s dad’s restaurant (Anton & & Michel) for the reception. There were so many smiles at the cocktail hour, and laughter all-around. I found myself finding tons of great subjects to candidly photograph with zero effort – this crowd was relaxed and happy for this couple.
Lots of great detail at this wedding – the floral arrangements were gorgeous, and check out the bi-plane groom’s cake! So great. Below are some of my favorite photos – enjoy!

I shot Laura and Kevin’s engagement / bridal portraits a couple days before their wedding in beautiful Point Lobos – so there wasn’t a ton of pressure for bridal portraits day-of (you never know how much time you’ll get). But because they opted for a pre-ceremony First Look, we had the time to explore the expansive and rustic grounds that Gardener Ranch has to offer in their nook of Carmel Valley. One of the big selling points of Gardener Ranch is how many people can be accommodated in their various houses scattered around the property – enabling people to enjoy themselves fully without having to arrange transportation afterwards 🙂
I met Laura in the immense bridal suite, which is set up like a salon with lots of room to spread out. The guys also have a large space in the same building (but with plenty of separation between the two). The decor is rustic/elegant – lots of recycled wood but adorned with crystal chandeliers. There were plenty of places to hang the dress and get creative detail shots of shoes, jewelry, flowers, etc. If anything, the property and buildings are so expansive, I was a little stressed I wouldn’t have time to fully take advantage of all the spaces available to me!
It ended up being a very HOT day, but thankfully the ceremony area was mostly in shade come time to walk down the aisle. Decorative details were high on Laura’s priority list (not quite high as the food and wine though!), so there was plenty to capture – and since it was a black tie affair, every guest was dressed to the nines.
Laura’s mom ended up passing not long after the wedding, so the emotions on this day were running strong and every moment heavy with meaning. I was honored to be there to capture mother and daughter, knowing the importance of my duties on this day.
The wedding was memorable, fully of laughter and tears – live music brought the day to a crescendo of excitement and action, and thankfully nobody fell in the pool (that didn’t want to…).

After an amazing first look/engagement session at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve / Moss Beach, I was anticipating a wedding day full of crazy fun wild people – and I wasn’t disappointed. Amanda and TJ are in their natural state when they’re laughing and having a great time. For their wedding day @ The Perry House (one of my favorite wedding venues btw), they surrounded themselves with people just like them – from the cluster of grandmas to college besties, everyone was bursting with excitement and love for Amanda and TJ. Even though we got a lot of great bridal portraits during their engagement session, we still had about 10 minutes do get some additional romantics around the Perry House property / neighborhood. I had a blast with everyone, can’t wait to work with you both again in the future…

Shannon and Sean decided to tie the knot in the Swedenborgian Church in San Francisco – a building that has changed little since it was built by its original pastor 120 years ago. Once inside the small church, it’s hard to imagine you’re in the middle of San Francisco – its spartan, rustic decor of wood and stone makes one feel transported to another age. Like the church, this couple has roots that run deep. They’ve already added a beautiful little girl to their family, and this official event allowed all their friends and family to celebrate their love. While the church property is pretty small, Shannon and Sean’s guests filled it perfectly with lots of hugs and laughter. After the ceremony and paperwork, we took the formal photos in the lovely garden area – then headed to the Italian Athletic Club for the reception.
Because the Nike 1/2 Marathon was in town, parking around the North Beach part of town was… stressful. By the time I made it to the reception I was about to have a minor heart attack, thinking I’d missed a toast or other important event. Luckily I hadn’t, and could focus on doing what we wedding photographers do – capture fleeting moments of joy, action and excitement – which I did right up to the end of the last dance!

I’m always so honored when a previous wedding client comes back to me time and time again for their big life moments. After their engagement/family session, wedding, and maternity session, today I had the privilege of photographing Stevie and Angelo’s week-old son Sid. I don’t really advertise myself as a newborn photographer, but I’ve kind of become one by necessity – by demand from past wedding clients. I’ve yet to have a newborn I can freely pose like Anne Geddes, so I don’t have that kind of magical powers – but I’m still perfectly capable to take a few photos that I know this couple will treasure for many years. And I look forward to many more photo shoots with this growing family.
Below are some of my favorite photos from the newborn photography session. Enjoy!
