PotD (Photo of the Day) – Conrad Family

PotD: 2010.10.11

Date Taken: 2009.11.01

Photo Specs: Nikon D3 + 28-70/2.8 lens @ 45mm, f/3.5,  ISO 220, no flash

Why it’s cool & how I got it: Sometimes photography is all about changing perspective. Whether it’s crouching down low to shoot a newly-crawling baby to see life from their point of view, or taking a ride in a helicopter to get the bird’s eye view, it’s our job as photographers to “see” differently than everyone else.

I had this great family session with Jason and Madelyn Conrad a couple years ago in Sunol, and I remember this shot distinctly because of the effort it took for me to climb the vine-infested metal lattice structure in order to be able to shoot straight down. I was driven by the shot, the vision, in my head much more so than concern for my own personal safety, so I single-mindedly put in the effort necessary to make it happen. I think it paid off as I captured this wonderful candid moment of the whole Conrad family splayed out on the picnic table. If you like it, leave a comment!

Nici + Dalas (Wedding)

Nici (“Nikee”) and Dalas (“Dallas”) are one of those couples that are just meant to be together. They’re laid back, funky and ironic in a cool way. We met at beautiful Highlands Park up in Ben Lomond; for those of you not familiar with the area, this is in the Santa Cruz Mountains past Scotts Valley and Felton, right off Highway 9. The last time I visited was 2003, attending a friend’s wedding. I think I took pictures with a point and shoot back then. My how times have changed! The house at this venue is neat – historical, I’m sure – and pretty much empty so there wasn’t a bunch of clutter to mess with the photography. I especially like the “getting ready” photos for this reason – very clean and simple, with nice natural light from outside.

Both Nici and Dalas’ families were fantastic, especially the “moms” – very accommodating and Nici’s Mom Kim really helped me power through our formal shot list, allowing me to focus more on photography and less on the human round-up game. Most of the afternoon was spent outside which is great – the sun was really hot during the ceremony, so I felt for the groom and his men in their suit jackets, but soon we transitioned to the reception and the sun dipped behind the grove of trees providing a glowing green backdrop for a beautiful evening. The dancing was crazy and everyone saw the newlyweds off with tossed glowsticks. It was lovely, unique, and memorable.

OK, so there’s too many photos in this slideshow. I always have a hard time narrowing them down – I can only imagine how my clients feel when trying to pick their favorites. If you’d like to check out the 1,000+ edited photos from Nici and Dalas’ wedding, mosey on over to my proofing site, www.GoodEyePhotography.com. If you like what you see, drop a comment below!

Rocio, Sebastian and Aiden (Family Portraits)

Rocio, Sebastian and 18mo Aiden are residents of Capitola, so it made sense to get some professional family portraits done near their home. We met downtown at Zelda’s and trekked to the east side of the beach, near the cliffs, for most of our photos. It was a quick session, not even an hour, but we ended up with quite a few keepers! Aiden was full of energy, and wouldn’t have any of that “sittin’ still” stuff, so we mostly got him on the move. He was enamored with the ocean, and took every opportunity to strut his little toddler-self seaside, prompting mom to run after him time and again. We’d chosen the time of the day based on low-tide, which happened to be near sunset anyways so must of the shots are all natural light, even though I had my portable light with me. The cliffs and cement wall, adorned with colorful green algae and other living “stuff,” made for some pretty stunning backgrounds and environments. I had a lot of fun catching some special moments with this family, Aiden definitely had me earning my money on this one 🙂 Thanks guys, you’re great!

Here’s my favorite 40 photos from the shoot below, there’s 141 edited photos in total to check out on my proofing site, www.GoodEyePhotography.com. Enjoy!

San Jose City Hall (Architecture)

The city of San Jose hired me to get a professional photo of the new-ish city hall. It’s a beautiful structure, and I’m sure there’s thousands of photos floating around of it, so I was flattered to have been chosen for the assignment. Of course I have a *little* experience shooting architecture, so I was up for the job. And did I mention I had to take the photos within the hour? Well the deadline wasn’t that close, but it was most convenient for my schedule, so I zipped over the hill and was able to capture these shots below. As I was walking back to my car, the ominous clouds you can see on the far left had made it over the city and started to do their drippy thing. Good timing!

Here’s most of the photos, I didn’t take a ton since they only needed one, so I got a few from different angles and elevations. All are processed with my own High Dynamic Range (HDR) processing technique. Enjoy, and check out the rest over here.

October 7, 2010 - 6:23 am Miguel - Great shots. Looks like a cartoon rendering from 3DS. Again, your post production skills are the icing on the cake.

Jennifer Astone (Portrait)

I met Jennifer near her home this morning, a short walk from Seacliff Beach in Aptos. She is a consultant for foundations and international organizations that give back to communities all over the world. She brings her vast organizational skills, networking connections, and just plain  good ol’ experience living and working for over 20 years in many African nations. She’s a global do-gooder, so it was the least I could do to upgrade her online visual presence for her website, www.JenniferAstone.com.

Here’s a few of the best shots from the session. I should have brought a blanket and set up shop on the beach, it is just so beautiful out today! If you’d like to see all 35 edited photos from our shoot, mosey on over to www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Milo Z (Poster Design)

R&B Productions, the promoter for the Milo Z tour coming to the Bay Area this week, hired me to design the posters for all the venues Milo Z would be playing at. Of course the band only had a photo – no logo or anything else to support the design. Luckily the photo (photographer unknown) was pretty good, giving me something to work with. The red-striped-jacket-guy in front gave me the design inspiration for the whole poster, and I went with red as an overall theme for the look.

For more info about the Milo Z tour, check out www.ReverbNation.com/miloz. For all my Santa Cruz friends, they’re playing in Felton at Don Quixote’s International Music Hall this friday night @ 8pm, so if you’re into Razzamofunk (Rock+Rap+Jazz+Blues+Funk) check ’em out!

October 5, 2010 - 11:03 pm Miguel - Dude, that poster looks awesome. As a matter of fact, it looks like an album cover. If the guy wouldn't have been wearing the suit I would have used the blue facade in the background for inspiration to give it that funk look. Great freagin' job.

Gutter Patrol Fall Postcard (Photography + Design)

Back in May, I got together with Gutter Patrol owners Eric and Amanda Branecki to create a truly unique postcard for their window-cleaning service. I had this idea to go extreme with the visual message of dirty windows, and luckily they loved the idea and went with it. Needless to say it was one of their most successful postcard campaigns ever! This set the bar high for this fall’s postcard.

We kicked around a few ideas – we wanted to keep a similar theme – extreme, yet humorous and communicating a clear message about the services offered. We decided to dress Amanda up like an old lady (yes she’s very pregnant as well but you can’t tell in the pics), hiring the talented makeup artist Shawn Cavlan to help with the aged look. Amanda had been scouring Good Wills for weeks collecting the necessary accoutrement for the shoot. Check out the process of the shoot over here. When Amanda was sufficiently transformed, she carefully climbed up the ladder we’d secured to start cleaning the dirty gutters we’d prepared. She’s clearly not enjoying the dirty work, especially after her husband Eric started creating the hollywood rain-effect with the water hose!

Here’s the shot we chose for the front of the postcard, as well as the final postcard design:

October 5, 2010 - 11:13 pm Miguel - Love all the work you put into it. Talk about taking it to a new level. I'm a little bit dissapointed you didn't somehow tie the old woman look into the tag line though. Of course, I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Unless it was like, "Dirty Gutters giving you grey hair?" "Don't wait till your 88 to clean out your gutters!" An enhancement in the future could be to use a cane to clean out the gutters and a tagline that says, "Yes, there is a better way to clean out your gutters" Great photo. Keep it up man!

Karen + Jack (Anniversary)

Although this looks more like an engagement shoot, this was actually a celebration of Jack and Karen’s third wedding anniversary! Usually I don’t see a whole lot between newly married couples and those celebrating their 50th anniversaries, so it was a treat to see someone celebrating in-between, just for the heck of it. Karen surprised her hubby with the shoot, and it resulted in their most memorable anniversary yet.

We met at the Capitola Wharf just as the sun was setting over the western cliffs. Karen had brought along her sister to help with makeup, hair, and fantastically superhero-speedy wardrobe changes. We spent most of our time exploring different areas of the beach, but we certainly didn’t ignore the colorful houses lining the beach that are basically a Capitola icon. When Karen showed up with her fancy high heels, I tentatively asked if she planned on wearing those on the beach – but five minutes later they were both soaked with water up to their knees and having a blast!

After going through all the photos, I was amazed that we captured everything in under an hour. I was working quickly as the ambient light was fading fast, but at the 45 minute mark I swear we’d been going at it for two hours! I’m glad we were able to get such a variety of locations, poses and lighting setups done in that time. Here’s some of my favorites from the shoot below, and if you’re eager for more, peep all 115 edited photos from the shoot at my proofing site, www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Social Business Trends: Why Survive When You Can Thrive?

Social media is changing the way small business works. Now word-of-mouth can be amplified to a cacophonous roar, and spread across the masses like a virus – and this is both good and bad. To the unscrupulous business owner that cuts corners, treats your staff and customers like crap, thinks service with a smile is old-fashioned, take note: your days are numbered. The open marketplace is being flooded by eager young professionals and entrepreneurs who “get it.” Conversely, your target customer, your audience, your livelihood is also increasingly more connected, tech-savvy, and wary of old-school advertising and promotion methods. These new customers know when you’re paying for advertising, and see through the bullshit you spout about yourself. Your new audience doesn’t trust the advertising of yesteryear – the print ads in glossy magazines, the flashy banner ads, the commercials – nor should they! The power has shifted to the average joe-schmo, and collectively all these joes communicate their endless devotion to, or dire revulsion for the established and new business community alike. They trust the word of a random online stranger over your own propaganda (as long as enough other random strangers concur with their opinion!).

Scary. Yet exciting.

Scary for the business owners who have lost their entrepreneurial enthusiasm and love for the customer. Exciting for those who haven’t, because this will help bring that slow-swinging pendulum back towards a priority of service and quality first, and away from cheapest deal at any cost. The crowdsourced masses of Facebook, Yelp, et al highlight and therefore bring more business to those that offer the best value – which is essentially an ideal combination of price, service and quality. Even though we’re in the midst of the worst recession in almost a century, I believe Americans still crave and value quality goods and services – just look at Apple, Inc. – they’ve always made quality products, but only recently has the world waken up and realized this (including myself!). I see this as evidence of the pendulum swinging back to where it belongs.

I’m thinking of these things because I’m a small business owner, striving to figure out how to make this whole photography thing work. I believe simple, strong principals provide the answer. Follow the Golden Rule, treat every client like a million bucks and good things will come. I read on Mashable recently (and paraphrase) that if you want a $2,000 gig, but only get $200 for it – give it a $2,000 effort and eventually the client with that budget will find you. I couldn’t agree more. I treat every assignment, and I mean every assignment like it’s going to end up in my portfolio. I see this blog as a chronological portfolio, so I want to make sure I have something I feel is worth sharing with the world every time I step out the door.

This effort, this attitude, is resulting in positive growth for my business. My web traffic on my proofing/printing site, www.GoodEyePhotography.com, recently broke the 100,000 page views/month mark, this blog is taking off and my new portfolio site, www.GoodEye.co is bringing in business on a weekly basis. Add my strong placement with Yelp (without advertising, mind you!), and things are looking on the up-and-up. Wish me luck, guys – I look forward to working with you, even if you’re “simply” a $200 client. I still love you, and you know I’ll do you proud.

October 13, 2010 - 1:52 pm Kimberly - This is a fantastic post. So many business have gotten fat off the high times and got lazy. I wonder how many businesses out there are googling themselves, checking their reviews, and taking the time to thank their clients. The drama surrounding Dawn, the photographer who padded her portfolio with stolen images last month (or August), still astounds and amazes me. Her name will be tied to "fraud" and "thief" for a long time due to social media. Thanks for forwarding this to me!

Forest Nymph, Captured (Portraits)

Janice has loads of personality – she’s crazy, spunky, vivacious, energetic, and has a mouth that would make a sailor blush (which she’s not afraid to use in her several hundred Yelp reviews – I fear for my future review!). She wanted to get some off-beat, yet professional portraits done–simply for the hell of it, and to surprise her photographer friends (or make them jealous?). Janice lives in Aptos near Nisene Marks State Park – a beautiful, expansive redwood forest interwoven with miles of meandering trails friendly to cyclists and runners alike. I picked her up at her place in my Mustang and we drove about a mile into the forest to the location Janice wanted to explore.

I immediately realized that I should have booked the session earlier than 5:30pm – it was already d-a-r-k in the forest. But I just dialed up the ISO on my Nikons and worked with the dramatic chiaroscuro the early-evening woods provided – oh, and of course I had my trusty lightbox on hand for a little natural emphasis 🙂

After getting out of the car and donning my gear, Janice (sporting her Vibram Five Fingers) skipped off into the forest. Wearing her loose-fitting white dress, contrasted with her Philipino bronzed skin, she looked like a fleeting wood nymph, zipping around the forest. I may be taking artistic license here, but work with me…

We found the graffiti-laden wood bench that she wanted to use for the first set of shots. She expressed her personality for me in true Janice fashion, cussing out her Words With Friends opponent on her iPad and pretending to be a nose-picking vagrant catching some zees.

We then hiked down to the river for a few shots on the bridge, tossing melon-sized rocks in the water and balancing on fallen trees. We had a good time, and the hour session (and the light) was passing quickly. Janice wanted to get a few shots with her elderly friend at the nearby Aegis Assisted Living center, where she used to work. It was touching, and I was happy to capture some tender moments between Janice and her old friend on the couch.

Here’s some of my favorites from the session, you can see all 65 edited photos at www.goodeyephotography.com.

September 30, 2010 - 6:32 pm Edward - Lovely

October 1, 2010 - 5:47 am Aileen - Too bad I can't comment per picture. However, these words come to mind: Stop messing about! Where's my laundry?? Do you need an Ajax bar and paddle to wash my clothes with? How much per hour for fluff and fold? Is that where you are going to hang them? Oh look a homeless sleeping on the bench...she's not gonna ask me for change is she? AAAH! It's the chupacabra! LOL! These were all very nice photos...No wonder she had to wear white...you wouldn't be able to see her in the dark! LOL! Love you Jan @$$!

Jada Giberson (Sunrise Yoga Portraits)

I met Jada, a fellow resident of the Seabright area of Santa Cruz, at 6:30am over at Aldo’s by the harbor. I got dressed in the dark this morning, so I was glad to see I hadn’t put on anything backwards when we saw each other. When we’d discussed the plans for the shoot the previous day, Jada said she just needed some new headshots for her business website she’s in the process of building. Jada is a wellness/nutritional counselor and yoga instructor, so I suggested we do a sunrise session at the beach – because I’d always envisioned this would be cool to do. As soon the words left my mouth, I was like, “What were you thinking Chris? You’re not a morning person!!” But the cat was out of the bag, and Jada was excited about the idea, so I went with it.

I’m glad I did.

In only a few minutes, the sky was lightening up with gorgeous hues of yellow, orange and blue. I grabbed my gear and we headed out towards Walton Lighthouse, the iconic landmark for Seabright Beach. I asked Jada to get warmed up while I tested my lighting equipment and waited for the ambient light increase a bit. Soon we were shooting away and having a great time. We experimented with a few poses on top of the tetradons (yeah, I’m super-smart because I know what those giant cement “jacks” are called). Of course we picked that one tetradon with the tiled red heart embedded on it. Cool stuff. Then we moved out past the lighthouse to the large, raised cement block – it looks like a foundation for something that used to be on top of it. It was all wet from the high-tide waves crashing over that area, which was cool because it reflected Jada when she stood on top of it. We got a gorgeous series of poses, and even one “money” shot with waves crashing in the air behind Jada, as if she were summoning the ocean spirits to do her bidding. Of course as soon as I turned my back to the water, Jada summoned a rogue wave that almost took me out and got my pants and one of my cameras all wet. No biggie, nothing destroyed – my fault for not paying attention!

Anyways, enough talk – who reads this stuff anyway? Mom? Are you there? Here’s some of my favorites from the shoot. If this isn’t enough, there’s 87 edited photos to view on my proofing site, www.goodeyephotography.com.

October 5, 2010 - 5:48 pm Rachel - Hi Chris, Thanks for sharing those photos with me! They are really lovely! I especially like the standing pose with arms up- the black and white one is stunning and pigeon pose with the spray in the background is wonderful! Really beautiful shots! Hey...I wonder if maybe you'd want to come take some photos of the kiddos in class. Perhaps we could trade the next session of kids classes for some candid kids yoga photos in the studio? Let me know what you think, or if you're open to it? Nice to meet you! Rachel

Tim + Heather (Engaged)

I met this lovely couple a few weeks ago during our initial wedding consultation, and they wasted no time booking a date to get their engagement photos done. They are beach people, and it just so happens I live in a beach town – so it was a natural fit! We actually went up to Pescadero State Beach, which I’ve never really explored as it’s about 2/3 of the way from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay. We met about an hour-and-a-half before sunset where the freshwater river meets the ocean. It’s a beautiful location stocked with colorful rock cliffs, caves, natural bridges/tunnels, a real bridge, a rushing river and of course the beach – one of the biggest surprises were the beautiful orange and purple starfish that we saw everywhere (it must have been low-tide).

We scaled steep cliffs on our descent to the beach, and I was excited to discover Tim & Heather didn’t mind getting a little wet for the photos. At different points I actually had my lightstand submerged in rushing river water, balanced precariously on weathered dirt mounds, and even held at odd angles by Tim, who assisted me on the ring shots (thanks Tim!). I’m actually amazed I didn’t destroy any equipment during the course of this shoot.

Tim and Heather are on the quiet side, but adventurous in spirit and a natural couple. I may have forced them into some small, wet caves (for the shot, guys, for the shot!) and step into “quicksand” (seriously!), but they seemed more concerned about my own well-being than themselves – on second thought, perhaps they were worried about their photos getting submerged and destroyed, but I’ll just pretend it was bodily harm they were primarily concerned about.

Here’s my favorite photos from the shoot, set to a little Journey soundtrack – one of their favorite bands. Enjoy! And feel free to check out all 105 photos from Tim and Heather’s Engagement Session if you like!

September 30, 2010 - 11:56 am Brien T. Arakaki - Very nice Chris, you have done a very nice job in capturing the love & spirit of Heather and Tim in these photos. I am very happy that they have your business. You truly have an eye for extraordinary captures. I look forward to seeing more of your artwork in this upcoming year as the wedding approaches.

CEFPI Group Photos (Portraits)

The Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI) needed a group photo of their team as they were visiting San Jose for their annual meeting of members from around the world. I didn’t research the organization too deeply, but according to their website, they’re a:

“…worldwide professional 501 (c)(3) non-profit association whose sole mission is improving the places where children learn… CEFPI members, individuals, institutions and corporations are actively involved in planning, designing, building, equipping and maintaining schools and colleges.”

I dragged them around Cesar Chavez park in the heart of downtown San Jose and took these pictures:

Dee + Andrew (Wedding)

I met Dee and her twin sister way back in college, and thanks to Facebook we reconnected last year. We’d known of each others’ goings-on in a general sense through common friends, so she knew I’d gone professional with photography since the college days. As she was recently engaged, Dee contacted me to see if I was interested in shooting her wedding. Of course I was, and today was a fantastic reconnection with Dee and her sister Marnell – spending the morning and afternoon together on the most special of days.

Andrew and Dee share a common love for adventure and the outdoors, and their wedding location and decor followed this theme beautifully. The beautiful shores of Zephyr Cove Lake Tahoe, the redwood slab holding up the wedding cake, and the birch trees cut to hold the table place cards all worked together to form a rustic, yet exotically beautiful scene. And of course Andrew and Dee – honest, caring and very much sincerely in love – were the core component of this memorable day. I’m thankful they trusted me to capture everything in my own special way, and truly hope they are moved by my vision and execution of the photography.

Below is a slideshow of my favorite photos set to music by Jack Johnson (one of their favorite bands); please leave a comment if you like what you see. Visit my main website to view all of Dee and Andrew’s wedding photos.

Tally Hoe Down at the Menlo Circus Club (Event)

As the official photographer for Allied Arts Guild in Menlo Park, I donated my services to the annual Tally Hoe Down event they help put on. It’s basically a fund-raising effort to benefit the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, so I was perfectly content contributing my time and resources for the good cause. Many local restaurants participated, offering up some delicious appetizers for the event. There was a silent auction, some young riders demonstrating some equestrian acrobatics on the field, and later a buffet dinner inside with a live auction, live music and of course dancing! Here’s a few of my favorite photos below, you can see more photos from the event over here.

Rachel + Brandon (Wedding)

I met Rachel and Brandon when we had our engagement shoot back in July of this year down in my old stompin’ grounds, Morgan Hill. During that shoot – I discovered they were a special couple – not only are they both incredibly easy on the eyes, but they have a chemistry that makes them interact in easy and natural ways. I barely had to direct them during our first shoot – and after a few minutes it was like I wasn’t even there. Looking back at the photos there’s a sense of intimacy and closeness, you’d swear there wasn’t a photographer present, and that the photos were simply created out of thin air.

Fast forward two months and the wedding was upon us. I knew we would create some amazing photos after our first session, and I wasn’t disappointed. I got up super early so I could meet the groom and his buddies at Coyote Creek Golf Course – I joined them for a few holes to get some unique posed and candid shots. After that I went to meet up with the girls at Tip ‘n’ Toe Salon. I hung out with the ladies while they got their mani/pedis, after which I continued to follow Rachel to the salon and then to her mom Jill’s house. At mom’s place (did I mention Jill is a knockout just like her daughter?), I got to know the immediate family better, including Rachel’s brother (Christian), sister (Nicole) and of course her adorable retriever Parker.

Finally it was time to go to Clos LaChance Winery for the final phase of getting ready before the main event was to go down at 5:30pm. The bridal suite was stunning, and everyone was drinking a little liquid courage, courtesy of the winery. My buddy and talented photographer friend Sam Fontejon showed up and hung out with the boys downstairs, where they were inevitably sampling their own variety of spirits. I also met Dan and Cassie, husband/wife owners of Los Gatos DJ (they were super-great by the way!). The ceremony was probably the fastest I ever witnessed – maybe five minutes – but it was “just right.”

We ended up only having about 15 minutes to do the bride and groom formals, but the sun was setting on the valley over the vineyards, and the scene was simply “epic.” A beautiful couple paired with a stunning backdrop made for some serious portfolio photography! The rest of the night was a blur, and I was certainly beat after putting in a 16 hour workday, but for Rachel and Brandon, it was all totally worth it. Congratulations guys!!

Please check out my favorite photos in the slideshow below. If that’s not enough, please check out my main website for all 911 photos from Rachel and Brandon’s big day!

Kwapinski Family (Maternity)

Okay, where do I begin… Well, I met Jen Kwapinski, owner of Jen’s Cakes, a few months ago at a networking event at Morton’s Steakhouse in San Jose. She had some amazing cupcakes for people to enjoy – and I fell in love with her red velvet. We got to know each other a little, and I suggested we do a maternity shoot when she was a little further along. We kept in touch, and eventually set a date once she swelled to the appropriate dimensions (ha!). I met Jen, her husband Anthony and 22mo daughter Caeden at the Asiel Design warehouse in San Jose. Jen knows the owners so we were able to have full after-hours access to the joint. Any photographer that digs the rusted-corrogated-metal-old-deteriorating-wood-flaking-faded-paint-look would absolutely die if they shot there. You could do 100 senior portrait sessions and still have variety. And the place is filled with all kinds of cool props that Asiel Design use to decorate their amazing weddings.

Back to the shoot – Jen brought several cool outfits and a few props – funky jewelry and a little electric guitar (they’re having a boy). Jen isn’t a girly-girl, so she wanted to take a different approach to her maternity photos. When she mentioned the giant black throne with big skulls on the armrests, I knew I was in for an exciting shoot. Enjoy my favorites in the slideshow below, set to a little Goo Goo Dolls music. September 15, 2010 - 10:39 pm Jen - Jen's Cakes - CHRIS! Where do I begin? Thank you so much for taking the time to shoot our family. I know our baby girl was a little sad most of the time and I'm just so grateful for your patience and understanding. Hmmm? Must be the daddy experience you have! Thank you for being so flexible and working w/ what I wanted. I LOVE the end result. Of course I wish I was more photogenic in all of the pics but there is only so much a photographer can do with a crazy subject. :-) Thanks again!!

September 29, 2010 - 2:39 pm Coyolxauhqui Anhder - I love the contrast in these pictures! I personally like Jen's funny and smiley shots rather than her serious ones...but still, super cool pictures!

Karyn + Grant (Wedding)

I met Grant and Karyn through Franco Uomo, the upscale men’s clothing store at Santana Row. While there, Grant got a few items for his suit, and when he mentioned he was getting married in a few weeks, Franco asked if he had a photographer. A couple days later, Grant and Karyn ended up hiring me for their big day without a moment to spare – and I hadn’t even met them in person!

Their wedding was very much DIY – the flowers/bouquets, the reception, the cake topper, the wedding board, the video, the music – it was all put together by the couple and their close friends and family. I was pretty much the only hired professional for the day – but I can safely say their money was well spent 🙂

Karen is Greek, so the wedding took place at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church in San Jose. The reception was held at Grant’s father’s place in Los Gatos, which really was done up nicely. The coolest part was the giant “throne” that’s always gracing the front porch. Grant’s dad had to install a fence around the yard a while back just to keep the passing nightlife crowd from sitting on it to take pictures. You know what? Scratch that. The throne was neat, but the coolest thing was Karyn donning a sweet pair of cowboy boots when the dancing started so she could get her cowgirl groove on. Yeehaw!

I truly enjoyed helping out throughout the day and being a part of everything. I think I was even christened a deputy brides-man for going above and beyond my normal photographer duties. I hope you enjoy the slideshow of my favorite photos below, set to Karyn and Grant’s favorite song “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure.

Not satisfied with seeing only the photographer’s favorites? You can check out ALL of Karyn and Grant’s wedding photos at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

September 8, 2010 - 2:28 pm karyn menexas - Thank you for capturing all the beauty, fun and love on our wedding day! :-)

September 10, 2010 - 8:14 am Connie & Dixon Haun - Connie & I wish you the best in your new life. God Bless

September 10, 2010 - 3:40 pm Niki Nut - You have indeed captured the awesomeness of Grant and Karyn!

September 10, 2010 - 10:45 pm Galfromdownunder - It's not too hard to make a bride look beautiful and a groom look like a prince ... but a great photographer makes the rest of us look like movie stars (with not too much photoshopping). Chris is the man!

Matt Mermod’s New Menu Creations (Kaama Lounge, Food Photography)

I’ve shot Chef Matt’s food before, but he’s got some new menu items at Kaama Lounge so I was obliged to do my thing! Kaama’s menu is motivated by “childhood comfort food with a gourmet twist” – and they’ve certainly made a splash in the foodie scene with a number of entrees and appetizers motivated by this theme. Matt is constantly evolving the menu based on customer feedback, most notably the new addition of larger portions from some of the more successful tapas items.

Here’s the best shots from the shoot, don’t miss the cocktails we did afterward, they’re amazing! Visit www.GoodEyePhotography.com to view all the photos from the shoot.
