It’s been a while since I’ve shot a wedding at Chaminade, and I got the opportunity to come back in full force for Jennifer and James’ big, awesome, Jewish celebration. There were so many sweet moments, and their expansive bridal party was a riot to hang out with – impromptu song and dance were frequent and hilarious! Jennifer planned this wedding from the East Coast in Alabama, so it was critical she found reliable vendors she could count on to deliver on her big day – and I’m pretty sure we all did!! Between my second shooter Sam and I, we captured over 1,000 photos to vividly tell the story of their day – from getting ready to the bubbly exit. Enjoy the photo preview below!

Most businesses either love or hate Yelp – and sometimes a little of both. Out of all the review sites, Yelp is the only one I know of that actively filters reviews it doesn’t think as credible, so you know the vast majority of the ones you see are legitimate. More and more customers are turning to review sites to make their purchasing decisions, so it’s more important than ever to provide a flawless customer service experience if you want to stay in business. Yelp is not just for restaurants, either – a significant percentage of my clients either found me on Yelp, or it played a critical role in reviewing my company before they ultimately contacted me.
When I first took my photography business full-time in 2010, I would sometimes wake up in a sweat, dreaming someone had left me a 1-star review and panicking how it would affect my business. As I gained reviews slowly, my next concern was how many reviews would get filtered out – becoming “not recommended” and hidden from view. I had worked so desperately for each hard-won review, it was so disappointing to see them disappear. Once I got to 30 or 40 reviews, I stopped paying attention, though – knowing that there were enough “live” reviews for potential customers to get a good sense of the experience I strive to provide for each client, big or small.
Five years later, I have received my 100th 5-star review (OK, I have 67 more that are filtered out, but we’ve already decided not to stress over those). For now, I’m super excited to have 100 live reviews, and although tomorrow that number may be 99, the screenshot below will stand for posterity.
This past half-decade has been a wild ride as GoodEye Photography has really taken off. I still pinch myself that I get paid to live out my creative dream, and will continue to work my magic for many years to come. I’m humbled and grateful, and appreciate everyone that has helped along the way – family, friends, and clients turned friends. Thank you everyone!

I got an email a couple days ago from Kaela’s mom, telling me her soon-t0-be-son-in-law would be proposing to his girlfriend on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk Beach today – and Brian would love for me to capture the whole thing. I’m always down for a proposal, I mean – so romantic, such a cool thing to capture, and I get to partially live out my childhood dream of being an international spy.
So I’m being a little dramatic, but it is pretty thrilling to get a dossier of what’s going down, replete with mugshots of those involved, marked up satellite imagery describing where and when the targets will be, descriptions of clothing, etc.
A last-minute location (and wardrobe) change kept me on my toes, but soon enough I saw my marks casually strolling down the wharf… checking out the sea lions, meandering here and there. Some guys draw this part out, either due to nervousness or just waiting for the right moment, I don’t know. Thankfully Brian steered Kaela away from the crowd almost as soon as he spotted my camera (I was made!), and the way he was searching his pocket for the ring box I knew it was going to go down quickly. I was a little unsure where to go without being obvious since we were away from everyone, but as soon as Brian got down on one knee Kaela’s world shrunk down to a small bubble with just her and Brian in it, completely caught by surprise and delight and ISTHISREALLYHAPPENING? I smiled as I fired away, capturing this precious moment that I knew they’d treasure for years to come.
Finally Kaela spotted me, looking momentarily confused, then Brian and I let loose with the plans, all the people that were involved and waiting nearby to celebrate. The revelations were coming in waves, prompting more tears – it was so great! I gave them a few minutes to themselves, then after some mascara clearing I led them through a quick portrait session before sending them off to their futures together.

I got a call from Jeff (Robert Baratheon) a few days ago – he and his kids were visiting Capitola for a few days and wanted to do a little something untraditional for their family portraits. Game of Thrones was the winning theme, so they scrambled for costumes, and ad-libbed where they needed, and met up with me this evening at Capitola Beach. I set up our stage in front of some boulders, right next to the stairs that come down the cliff to the beach. I hid a couple Nikon SB-800 speedlights in the boulders to add a little separation/visual interest, and used my Profoto B1 w/ 30″ softbox as my main light, fairly high up over their heads for some dramatic lighting. Some extra polish in Lightroom brought the drama and grittiness up to where I envisioned. I thought they came out really well – afterwards we did a more “traditional” shoot but I think the GOT shots will be what hangs on their wall at home! What do you think?

It’s been a few years since I shot a wedding at the exclusive Chateau in Los Altos – it’s a gorgeous private estate built to satisfy the most discriminating bride. And the catering…. is delicious. They run an open kitchen in the guest house, so the intoxicating smells make tummies grumble if you get too close. After having a really fun Hidden Villa engagement shoot, I was super excited about Katherine and Trevor’s big wedding at The Chateau.
Even though the girls were pretty chill during the getting-ready phase at Katherine’s parents’ place – it was great to hang out, get some lovely detail shots as well as a few candids. Trevor and his brother are absolutely hilarious together, so hanging out with the guys at The Chateau was pure comedy gold. Getting all of them together made everything more lively and exciting.
Katherine and Trevor put their full trust in my creative juices, so I used what time I had to do my magic. The whole afternoon and evening was intimate and special – and did I mention the awesome food? I wish these two lovebirds nothing but the very best, and can’t wait to work with them again.

If you’ve never been to Five Wounds church in San Jose, it’s an architectural marvel that can hold the largest of weddings – and where Diana and Hector decided to tie the knot on their wedding day. I’ll be honest, the vast majority of this wedding was Spanish-only, so if I didn’t already have a few hundred weddings under my belt I would’ve had a tough time anticipating all the moments that needed to be captured. But I was also raised a Catholic, so this full mass was pretty familiar to me. And because the church is so large, there’s plenty of room for me to navigate around for different angles without obstructing anyone’s views.
Because the itinerary was running late, and another wedding was happening immediately after ours, the post-ceremony family formals was a mad-rush (I was super impressed by the self-organization of the families!) – but quickly executed. Afterwards, the bridal party headed over to the Japanese Friendship Garden, where only a dozen or so other shoots were happening – surprise surprise for this busy summer Saturday in July! We carved out our niche and after getting some great group portraits I was able to focus on Diana and Hector themselves. Hector was looking ship-shape in his Marine kit, casually shunning the sweltering heat with military discipline. Diana was looking stunning in her bridal gown, and I had a lot of fun getting some creative and romantic photos throughout the garden property.
The reception at Morgan Hill Community Center was filled with Folklorico dancing, mariachi music, and a live banda to keep things lively and entertaining. I had a wonderful time with these two and wish them the very best in their future together.

Holy smokes, this is one hot couple! I met Brian through some commercial photography I’ve done with his golf club, so he was familiar with how I am to work with, and the level of fit and finish he can expect from the photos I produce. I was honored when he asked me to shoot his wedding at Nicklaus Club in Monterey, so of course I accepted! These two are so madly in love, and they’ve got that natural chemistry I love to work with, so shooting with them was a photographer’s dream. They put complete trust in my creative instincts, knowing the results would be killer – thankfully they were right! The whole day was a whirlwind of amazing moments surrounded by incredible decor, smiles and laughs, tears of joy. I can’t say any more, just look.

This was the first wedding I’ve shot at Mount Madonna County Park, and I have to say it’s a pretty amazing venue and natural setting for a wedding. They have a large amphitheater with a redwood log-backed stage for the actual ceremony to take place. Rachel and Mark had a fantastic florist who created this enormous exotic bouquet to dress up the stage and harmonize with the surrounding forest environment.
After the ceremony, we explored the forest a little, escaping from the gusts of wind that almost blew us over in the prairie behind the ceremony. Rachel and Mark had scoped out some ruins in the forest from an old mill, so we focused the bridal portraits in this area. The sun backlit the trees, creating beautiful dramatic lighting for this series of portraits.
The reception was held at Mark’s parents’ place in Watsonville, which is beautifully landscaped and smartly laid out to throw the perfect party. The florist Mimi Snowden, who’s also the caterer, created some amazing dishes for everyone to enjoy. Instead of cake, the couple cut into a homemade pie – love the unique touches at this wedding.

What’s more romantic than getting married in the center of a redwood grove, shaded by the massive trees and backlit by shaft of sunlight beaming through the branches? Um, not a whole lot! Lisa got the romantic ceremony spot, but self-confessed train nut Chris got the big trains and a weekend-long event for model train lovers. I’d say it was a win win for everyone 🙂 The wedding venue of course is Roaring Camp Railroads in Felton, California. Tucked in the mountains, but 20 minutes from the ocean, Roaring Camp is a giant venue than can cater to medium to large weddings, and even take all your guests up the mountain to the ceremony spot in a real, steam-engine-driven train. So fun, and such a memorable experience for everyone.
Lisa and Chris are an adorable couple, easy to work with, and both look stunning in front of the camera. They’re not models, but they looked the part on their big day. I had so much fun capturing the big and little moments throughout the day – when your job is this easy, it’s hard to call it work.

It’s been a while since I’ve shot at Sunny Cove beach, and I’d forgotten what a little gem this protected cove is! It’s pretty much a locals beach, bordering on private (in fact I hear it is privately owned, but available to the public – which is rare for this area). The star of the show was one year old Weston, though – looking mighty dapper, especially with that fancy fedora and adorable grin. Some extended family joined the party and we mixed it up some.

This traditional Catholic celebration was such a joy to capture. Monica and Kevin tied the knot in their hometown church in Salinas – a place that is so special to them both. They didn’t want to see each other beforehand, so we had to take special care when walking around the corridors of the church to keep the two separate! The full mass was intimate as more people would show up for the reception. After the ceremony and a few family portraits in the church, the couple and I headed over to Carmel River State Beach for some formal romantic portraits. It’s a popular family destination, so they received plenty of congratulations as we made our way through the sand! You can tell from the photos these two simply adore each other – the look in their eyes says it all.
Mission Ranch is always a fun venue to work at – there’s green fields spotted with puffy white sheep with the ocean beyond them. The reception hall is positioned above these (great panoramic view!), and was decorated with sparkly lights and clean, light decor. There was laughter and tears, and the overwhelming sense of joy that accompanies witnessing a new chapter in someone’s lives. Thank you so much for choosing me to capture this day for you two!

Britainy’s tousled, flaming red hair was a perfect match for this evening’s cold and windy San Francisco weather. But her fiancé Marcos was there to stoke the fires and keep things lively and fun. We started their engagement shoot at the Legion of Honor – it was after hours, but there was still plenty of inspiration for me around the property – the roman columns, the green lawn spotted with white flowers, the panoramic vistas of San Francisco… so much to see. But the stars of the show were these two lovebirds, who started out with amazing chemistry, and were molded into pure romance with my (not so subtle) direction 🙂 After exploring the Legion of Honor for 45 minutes or so, they were ready for an outfit and location change – so we headed down to Baker beach, only 5 minutes away. The marine layer was coming in, so we got some nice diffused light. We started out with the money shot with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, and explored the beach a little from there. By now we were all pretty cold, and wrapped things up after 20 minutes or so. I absolutely loved working with Britainy and Marcos, and am really looking forward to celebrating their wedding day this September at Pema Osel Ling.

When I take an individual’s portrait for business purposes, I try to find out exactly how they intend to use the photos. Usually it’s for their LinkedIn profile or their professional website. However, sometimes they’d also like a couple more casual portraits for dating sites or other uses – so my goal is always to provide options for my clients – both in what they choose to wear as well as the environment we shoot in. Because I travel to my client’s homes, businesses, or other private or public locations – I am flexible enough to offer diversity and options to my clients.
In Kirsten’s case, she didn’t need photos for a dating site (I photographed her wedding at the Monterey Bay Aquarium), but she did need some headshots for LinkedIn. We started with a more traditional portrait with a neutral wall in her home, then went to a nearby park in Mountain View to take some more photos with a natural (but subtle) backdrop. Because I used the same off-camera lighting equipment for both indoor and outdoor locations, the photos have a consistent look and feel. Personally I love the candid nature of the outdoor shot (and the slight breeze did some fun things with her hair) – but like I said, it’s great to have options for your business portraits as you never know how you’ll need them in the future.

Wow wow wow – Hai and Mai, you’re my new favorite rhyming couple. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t easy directing each of you by name – I’m sure I tripped over my words more than a couple times, but you took my direction well and we made some amazing photos together. You’ve got chemistry, and are clearly in love. This makes my job easy, really – so thank you.
We spent an hour and a half exploring the towering architecture at Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. The first half of the shoot was spent relatively sheltered from the howling winds (okay, I exaggerate – but it was quite windy and cold). I was able to use my lighting gear for this part of the shoot – but once we emerged from the protective walls, the lighting equipment went back in the car and we went natural-light only. So in the end we got a nice balance of lighting styles and posed vs candid shots.

I absolutely adore these two – they’re all smiles, fun to hang out with, and have a goofy sense of humor that makes everyone smile. After their killer Sutro Baths engagement shoot, I knew the wedding day for these two newly-minted doctors was gonna be a blast! The wedding ceremony was held in Shakespeare Garden, which is a secluded little garden area hidden behind the Academy of Sciences building in Golden Gate Park (San Francisco). It’s got a romantic brick walkway that is lined by some kind of cherry blossom trees – they encapsulate the path to create a natural tunnel which is the perfect place for a first look, and of course the processional path for the wedding. We arrived a couple hours before the ceremony and did just that – I organized a first look, having Lillian sneak up on William, capturing the anticipation on both their faces. I *love* creating these private moments, it’s just so special to witness and photograph. From there we roamed around the garden, exploring all its nooks and crannies – taking bridal portraits along the way. We had enough time to venture into the open space between the Academy of Sciences and DeYoung Museum – namely the Music Concourse / Spreckels Temple of Music. The “whomping willows” were in their blooming phase, and the Roman columns and active fountains were fully explored before we needed to get back for the ceremony.
After the ceremony, a couple San Francisco trolleys pulled up nearby to take all the guests to Dogpatch Wineworks, which is a really neat little spot in the Potrero Hill / Mission Bay area. It’s in an industrial area, so the outside is rather unassuming, but once you enter the space, the modern decor, walls of wine barrels, and large open space give it a welcoming, trendy vibe. Hunt & Littlefield did an amazing job with the floral design, and the lighting created a cozy ambience (check all the vendors shoutouts below). Lill and Will didn’t want a traditional reception, opting more for a fun party atmosphere than specific events. However, they did dazzle the crowd upon their official entrance with a swinging’ choreographed dance – I was super impressed with the fluidity and confidence they brought out to the dance floor. The rest of the evening was filled with smiles and laughter, I really enjoyed spending the day with Lill, Will, their family and friends. Below are some of my favorite photos – enjoy!

Vietnamese weddings require a full week’s worth of good sleeping – because the day-of, you’re starting early and ending late. They are usually big, enormous parties with 250+ people, and pretty much everyone wants posed group photos. Vivan and Patrick’s big day was no exception, and had all the wonderful highlights and little moments I’ve come to expect from a Vietnamese wedding. From the bold, vibrant colors of clothing to the busy beehive ambience while everyone got ready for the Tea Ceremony in the morning; from the gorgeous full-mass at Five Wounds church (and the dynamic priest – what a guy, even if I couldn’t understand him most of the time!) to the lovely Japanese Friendship Garden… and don’t forget the classic reception venue – Dynasty Restaurant in San Jose. It’s huge. They pretty much specialize in Vietnamese events. And they know how to decorate and accommodate massive groups of people.
Vivan and Patrick are a couple of sweethearts, and I loved working with them – from their engagement party to their Palace of Fine Arts engagement shoot – and now the epic wedding day. They were ALL SMILES ALL DAY not only because they had to (did I mention all the group photos?), but because they’re clearly mad for each other. My associate Sam Fontejon and I had a blast, and when we got tired on our feet we were treated to the same 11 course meal as the rest of the guests. Add to this the live music and truly entertaining table visits by the married couple, this day was one to remember.
