Christina + Jamie (Aptos Wedding Photography) @ Sand Rock Farm

This was my first wedding at Sand Rock Farm Bed & Breakfast, so there’s always a little anxiety related to shooting at new places – which is why I show up early to get the lay of the land and scope out all the cool places to shoot. Nestled in the hills of Aptos, this quaint B&B has all the stuff that gets photographers like me inspired – lush garden, redwood groves, romantic pathways, old concrete structures, old house, texture, color and curiosities everywhere!

I met Jamie for the first time while I was walking around exploring (and while Christina was getting ready). He was mellow and excited about seeing his bride to be. The ladies were also excited, attempting to mellow things out with some White Russians (in bottle form!). Christina and Jamie’s mutt “Forrest” thought he was the one getting married to his treasured princess whom he protected from the camera on every occasion. He did have a tux, so I can see where he got a little confused. Luckily he was included in the ceremony, which was SO adorable.

The outdoor reception and dancing was a lot of fun, you could tell there was a lot of love among the family and friends for Christina and Jamie. I couldn’t think of a better way to start a life together. Enjoy the photos guys, my faves are below.

Sarah + Kenny (Soquel Wedding Photography, Michael’s on Main)

I never met Sarah and Kenny until their wedding day as it was more of a destination wedding for them and their guests (coming form Oregon). There’s always a little anxiety/excitement when this happens since it’s a really big event in someone’s life and you want to have a good connection with the bride and groom going into it. Luckily Sarah and Kenny turned out to be an easygoing, fun couple surrounded by their closest friends and family. They held their ceremony and reception on the back patio of Michael’s on Main restaurant in Soquel, California. It’s truly a hidden gem, and great for smaller weddings. The trees along the creek behind the restaurant provide the gorgeous filtered sunlight photographers love. I practically shot the entire wedding without using any flash, which is unusual for me.

The whole shindig lasted only a few hours, but we captured quite a few great shots that I hope the couple treasure for years to come. Below is a slideshow of my favorites from the day set to one of “their” songs, Feeling Good by Nina Simone. Want to see ALL the photos? Well mosey on over to www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

July 26, 2011 - 8:55 pm cindy dunn - I would like to have this picture if possible..

Jason + Kelley (Lakeland Village Wedding Photography, Lake Tahoe)

After a really romantic engagement session at 3-mile beach in Santa Cruz, I was really looking forward to Jason and Kelley’s wedding at Lakeland Village, South Lake Tahoe. We have a lot of common friends, which really adds to the fun of any wedding. Tahoe is a special place for me since that’s where Becky and I were married in 2003. Lakeland Village is a great  Tahoe wedding venue since everything can happen at one place – there’s tons of room for all the guests to stay (and vacation afterwards), and of course it’s beachfront property with epic views of the snow covered Sierras as a backdrop, which is pretty amazing to see in July.

Jason and Kelley has a beautiful ceremony on the lakefront beach, I especially liked the unique addition of using a hammer to nail the lid on a box containing a bottle of wine that they’ll keep sealed for a year. I think that’s WAY better than freezing the top of your cake (yuk!). The rest of the day was all about partying, and this crowd knows how to bring it. Many people were “iced” – having to bend to one knee and chug a Smirnoff Ice whenever they accidentally discovered one hiding. It was a great way to spice up the speeches and other random moments throughout the day.

Here’s my favorite 150 photos I feel cover the day pretty well. There’s lots more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com, but if you only have a few minutes, this is a great place to start. Feel free to comment below.

Lila + Dylan (Chaminade Wedding Photography, Santa Cruz)

What a fun group of people Lila and Dylan invited to their Chaminade wedding in Santa Cruz. It was a whirlwind of tattoos & cocktails mixed with love, tears and happiness. A strong current of Jamaican spirit wove through the day’s festivities, building to a fever pitch when Reggae band Warrior King took the stage to perform. It was a wedding I’ll never forget for many reasons, and I hope you enjoy the photos I captured throughout the day. Thanks Lila and Dylan for choosing GoodEye to capture your wonderful event. Jared + Jasmine (Roaring Camp Wedding Photography, Felton)

After our smokin’ hot engagement session at the beach, I couldn’t wait for Jared and Jasmine’s wedding at Roaring Camp in Felton. They are such a fun, happy couple – and clearly they’ve touched the hearts of so many friends and family. The whole wedding got a ride on the steam train through the redwoods and up to the top of Bear Mountain. Once there, we all made our way to the circle of redwoods where the ceremony was held. The emotion was tangible as these souls bound themselves to one another, it was an honor to be present at the event. The rest of the evening was full of dancing, special songs by friends and family, s’mores galore and lots of laughter.

Here’s my favorite photos from the day in a slideshow set to David Gray’s This Years Love. Feel free to leave a comment below – there’s many more photos to check out at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Anne + Jason (Wedding Photography: Carneros Inn / Truchard Winery, Napa, California)

Anne and Jason are from Florida and Montana, and decided to have an incredibly intimate destination wedding at Carneros Inn, Napa, California. You’d think early June would be a shoe-in for fantastic, sunny weather, but 2011 has been a year of change, and mother nature was throwing us all for a loop. It poured on my way up to Napa, and I was brainstorming how to make the weather work in our favor. I found Anne in good spirits as she was getting ready in her beautiful cottage. With only the immediate parents on both sides attending, there wasn’t all the extra fuss that comes with a large bridal party and hundreds of guests. It’s always special to be involved in such intimate affairs, and my short time with Anne and Jason was no exception.

We held the ceremony in the lobby of Carneros Inn, then went outside for some formals against the stormy backdrop of Napa Valley. I swear it stopped raining at all the right times, giving us some truly epic scenery to photograph against. After a few family photos, we drove to nearby Truchard Winery, which has an amazing setting – the vineyard on the side of the hill, the deep cellar with wine barrels and neat chandeliers, and a neat old house and barn – and you can’t forget The Goat that only wanted a few bites of Anne’s bouquet. Those photos alone made the long trip worthwhile.

Anne and Jason are a truly special couple, and it was an honor to spend a few precious hours with them and their family. They helped me make some of my best wedding imagery to date, and for that I’m extremely grateful! Here’s my favorite 150 photos in the slideshow below, set to Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros “Home.” Enjoy, and leave a comment if you like what you see.

Lynda + Marquino (Wedding Photography) St. Christopher’s Church, San Jose

Four years ago I shot one of Lynda’s coworker’s weddings, then another, and then another… So by the time Lynda needed a wedding photographer of her own, it was practically a foregone conclusion that she’d be seeking out my services. No pressure on my end, I was excited about the succession of beautiful brides coming from one workplace!

I met up with Lynda and her bridesmaids at The Fairmont Hotel, San Jose – a location I’m quite familiar with. I love this part of the day as the pace is slow, and I get a chance to get to know the core part of the family and friends involved in the wedding. Lynda was flawless in her beautiful gown, it was a joy to artfully capture her before heading off to St. Christopher’s church, where Marquino was nervously waiting with his best man.

With the vast majority of the guests joining up at the reception, the Catholic mass was shorter than I’m used to, but still beautiful and moving. Afterwards, we took a short trip to a nearby park for some inspired B+G formals. I promise I found the “Love” written on the pole, I try not to tag public property as a general rule. Found art is, well, found – and therefore acceptable.

The rest of the night built momentum – speeches, dancing, food, and of course – drinking. It peaked with one guest proposing to his girlfriend on the dance floor; Lynda and Marquino knew it was coming, so it was well within the boundaries of wedding etiquette. I had a lovely time with everyone, and am very excited to share my favorite photos from the event below. If you’d like to see more, click on through to www.GoodEyePhotography.com. Stacy *Truly* Trashes Her $5,000 Wedding Gown (TTD Photography)

I’ve waited SO long to do a Trash The Dress (TTD) session with one of my brides. Everyone always chickens out, but I can see why – the wedding is still fresh, and nobody wants to leave the party to change out of the wet dress (or destroy it, for that matter). Last year I ran into Stacy and her mom at a restaurant in Campbell where I was shooting some food. We got to talking and she brought up how she wanted to do a TTD session with her wedding gown. She didn’t see herself ever needing it again, so around six months later we finally worked out how we want to destroy it, and where.

I met Stacy and her friend Nick at White Crane Winery in Livermore (which Nick owns). He was kind enough to host the photo shoot on his birthday, and even donated the four or so bottles our shoot “required.” It was 10am when I got there, and 11am by the time we figured out where we wanted to shoot and all the other logistics involved – so definitely not ideal lighting getting close to noon. But I really like a punchy, dramatic, colorful, crisp look to my photography these days, so with some powerful off-camera flash I was able to work with the harsh sun no problem.

We started out by taking a few “normal” photos of Stacy in her dress around the property – you know, to memorialize the last moments of the clean gown for posterity’s sake. Then we headed out into the vineyard to get on with the pouring.

We decided to start small. I filled Stacy’s glass with some of Nick’s delicious 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon and she promptly tossed it up into the air above her, just like we’d practiced earlier. I got a great mid-air shot, but most of the wine went behind her. No worries, that was enough practice. On to the big guns.

Next I had Stacy pour two bottles of Cab on herself at the same time. We got an excellent series of this which I’m really happy with. But her head was still clean, which wasn’t cool with me – so I had her dump another bottle right onto her face. She obviously had to close her eyes to avoid the burning alcohol, but the shots totally make it worth it.

Now covered in red wine, we decided Stacy needed to be hosed off. We walked back to the yard in front of the main house and Nick did a little off-camera hosing while I snapped photos. I think they came out great.

Soaking wet, stained, train dragging mud across the gravel, Stacy followed Nick and I to a funky broken down forklift that’s painted like a cow. Perfect prop right? We took a few shots, then decided Stacy was looking too clean – so Nick ran back to the house to get some shoe polish. Yup, that did it. The dress was finally, irreversibly trashed.

I’m so excited that my first TTD session wasn’t some pansy frolic through the waves at the beach – the only way we could’ve taken this shoot to the next level was with fire – and I’m no pyrotechnics expert so that was off the table.

Enough chit-chat, here’s the photos, along with my commentary. Enjoy, and leave a comment!

Danny + Rachelle (Wedding Photography), Dolce Hayes Mansion, San Jose

After a super fun engagement session up in the city, I was psyched about shooting Danny and Rachelle’s much anticipated wedding at Dolce Hayes Mansion in San Jose. I arrived early as I pretty much always do to get the lay of the land and find cool places to shoot. It was a gorgeous day for an outdoor wedding, and excitement was running through the air like electricity. I met up with Rachelle in the Beryessa Suite where she was cool as a cucumber and all smiles. The big room was an explosion of hair products, makeup, clothes, food, and all the other usual collateral that accompanies a wedding day. I started doing my thing, capturing photos to tell the story of the day.

Danny was getting ready with his guys, and the scene was of course slightly different from the ladies. One of his groomsmen assembled a beautiful arrangement of shot glasses, and we all toasted to the hours to come. Did I mention I love weddings?

The rest of the day passed as a blur. A beautiful ceremony, lots and lots of formal photos, tons of creative and fun bridal party photos, dancing, emotional speeches, cake, and a few last minute B+G photos outside in the dark. Thanks Danny and Rachelle for including me in your festivities, I hope you enjoy the photos for years to come. Here’s a long slideshow of my favorite 175 photos that in my opinion tell the story of the day. If you don’t have the patience for a slideshow, feel free to browse the photos at my proofing site, www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Chris + Leah @ Cinnabar Hills Golf Club, San Jose (Wedding Photography)

I’ve known Chris and Leah for several years now, and I was excited when they asked me to officially capture the culmination of their wedding plans at the beautiful Cinnabar Golf Course in the hills above San Jose and Morgan Hill. We started the day at Hotel Los Gatos where some of the bridal party and family were staying – Leah’s suite was packed with people, surrounded by the usual chaos that comes with every wedding. I hung out with the ladies, sometimes a fly-on-the-wall, other times all up in their bid-ness. I like to change it up for variety’s sake!

After spending a few hours with the girls, I drove over to Chris’ house in Morgan Hill to see how things were progressing. Chris was busy settling his nervous canines, and anxious to get things going. But there was an underling current of excitement of things to come.

Next we arrived at the final destination, Cinnabar Hills Golf Club – a great venue with spectacular views. I heard they’ve got some great courses as well. But we were there to get some wedding on, not to tee off. Brittany Wilson, event coordinator-extraordinaire, did a fantastic job making sure things were rolling smoothly and that all the vendors were dialed in.

The ceremony went off without a hitch (well, with one “hitch” I suppose) with the sun shining, the skies pure azure, and the crowd beaming with happiness. We powered through the family formals and had about 20 minutes to walk out to the golf course to get some B+G formals done. A couple golfers were kind enough to spectate while we finished on the fairway, then we headed for the rough for some pretty epic photos with the sun streaming through the trees.

Inside, Denon and Doyle rocked the DJ scene – I recommended them to the couple and they surely didn’t let me down. After lots of dancing, emotional speeches and cake feeding, my day was done and all I have to show for it is these pictures.

Jared + Jasmine (Engagement Photography)

WARNING: This post has LOTS of big photos!!

What can I say, Jared and Jasmine are an Attractive Couple (see: capitalization) that knows good photography when they see it. They reviewed my work online and booked me for their upcoming wedding without even meeting me first. I could’ve been some psychopath that also happened to be a pretty good photographer, but they rolled the dice with me, for which I’m extremely grateful. I guess there’s those glowing Yelp reviews working in my favor, but who can you really trust these days?

I met J+J at Montara Beach, just south of Devil’s Slide on Highway 1 and a few miles north of Half Moon Bay. It was a beautiful drive coming from Santa Cruz with the top down, so I was in a great mood by the time I met up with the couple in the parking lot. They were clutching each other as it was breezy and a little chilly on this curve of Hwy 1, but luckily it wold prove to be much nicer down at the beach. After a treacherous sprint across the highway (feeling not a little like the character in the game Frogger) we started our photos on the bluff overlooking Montara Beach. The wind was whipping Jasmine’s hair into an unruly  frenzy of curls, so I took the opportunity to have Jared brush it off her face and throw in a couple kisses. The clouds were white and puffy, contrasting nicely with the deep azure sky. My off-camera strobes were in full-photon-power-mode to complement the bright ambient light, and the clouds really added to the drama in many of the photos.

I had such a fantastic time exploring the beach with Jared and Jasmine; engagement shoots are a great opportunity to get to know each other so by the time we get to the wedding, we’re like, old friends. I hope they cherish a few of the photos from this session, I really think some of them are powerful, romantic, and touching all rolled up in one.

Without further ado, here are my favorites. If you’d like to see more, hop on over to www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Saje & Sophia (Children Photography) @ Wilder Ranch, Santa Cruz

I think Wilder Ranch was at its peak today, the grasses were tall and green and I had two beautiful little girls to photograph there. Saje and Sophia were simply adorable, and were really great to work with. Their mom was a big help off-camera getting their attention for many of the photos. The boas were a nice, colorful touch – props are always great to work with, especially with kids.

Danny + Rachelle (Engagement Photography, Stow Lake and North Beach, San Francisco)

Even though I’m a Santa Cruz-based wedding photographer, I’m often traveling all over the Bay Area for my clients. Danny and Rachelle wanted their engagement shoot up in San Francisco, so I was excited to oblige. It was my first session at Stow Lake, which is part of the expansive Golden Gate Park. I got there early to explore before they came, and walked all around the island that’s at the center of Stow Lake. By the time I met the lovely couple, it was super cold with a frigid, gusty wind. Awesome! But my engagement sessions tend to run a little hot (if you know what I mean), so it’s a good thing we had nature keeping it cool.

After hiking around and getting some awesome photos with the sun setting over the city, we headed over to North Beach for some casual engagement photos on the city streets, cafes and local businesses. We had a great time, weather notwithstanding, and I am really looking forward to the wedding at Dolce Hayes Mansion in exactly ONE MONTH.

Enjoy the photos, leave a comment, more photos at www.GoodEyePhotography.com!

Grace and Ian (Family Photography, Santa Cruz)

Grace was visiting Santa Cruz from Southern California and wanted to get some professional photos of herself with her son, Ian. We met at Seabright Beach, which is always a great location (and within walking distance of my house!). I like Seabright in the morning as the sun is off to the left side of the lighthouse, meaning the ambient light around the cement tetradons is ideal for my off-camera artificial lighting system. These giant, four-tiered cement “jacks” are really neat for pictures as they are just so surreal, and add great texture and contrast to the ocean and surrounding area.

Here’s my favorite family photos from Grace and Ian’s session, you can see the rest at www.GoodEyePhotography.com. Feel free to leave a comment!

Julie + Derek = Danny (Family Photography, Santa Cruz)

Julie and Derek are scientists working in the Monterey Bay on contract. They were in the Santa Cruz area only for a short time, but fell in love with the weather and all there is to see and do here. Not surprising coming from the midwest! They wanted to get some family photos done along the coast to help them remember the area while suffering through brutally cold winters back home, so of course I was happy to help them with that.

We met along West Cliff Drive near one of their favorite trees, and then found our way down to the beach nearby. It was a relatively quick session, but Derek, Julie and their son Danny were a joy to work with. Below are some of my favorite photos from the entire shoot. Feel free to comment!

Ben + Juniper = Laila > Aurora (Family Photography)

I met Ben, Juniper and their little cuties Laila and Aurora at Lighthouse field, Santa Cruz for their family portrait session. After all this rain the grasses were so high, at times it felt like we were lions stalking prey in the African savannah… But the only guns were my Nikons, which managed to help me get some lovely photos of this attractive family of four. Laila, especially, was adorably photogenic with her Shirley Temple curls and cherub face. The thing I love about Lighthouse field is not just the green grass spotted with light flowers, but the large dead trees that mark the landscape like fallen heroes. Their twisted roots and solid trunks are a testament to their past liveliness, and retain a solidity that is not unlike their petrified brethren.

I hope you enjoy the photos, I’ve posted a few of my favorites below. There’s more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Petrea + Shawn = Sasha > Cody (Family Photography, Natural Bridges, Santa Cruz)

The Brown family was a pleasure to shoot and hang out with at the ever popular Natural Bridges State Park Beach in Santa Cruz, California. The park has everything – green fields of grass (in the spring), huge trees, fallen dead wood, blossoming flowers, a marshy pond, monarch butterflies and of course the beach with the natural bridge, rocky cliffs and tidepools to explore. It’s no wonder so many families want to shoot there. Shawn actually works for the CA State Parks, so it was interesting chatting with him about the goings-on from inside “the system.”

Little Cody was adorable, and I love the photos of Shawn handling him like a little living football. He’s totally mellow, and I’m sure Sasha will learn to adore her baby brother as time goes by (assuming he stays outta her stuff!). Enjoy the photos below, there’s more to check out at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Danielle + Andrew (Wedding Album)

Danielle and Andrew had the most gorgeous wedding last year up in Lake Tahoe. Revisiting the images from last September with their photo choices for the album was a real treat. I have to say they did a pretty good job picking the best photos to represent the day in a 30 page album. Enjoy the spreads below, I can’t wait to present the physical album to this lovely couple. See more photos from Dee and Andrew’s wedding!

Shawn + Joy = Summer > Pierce > Julia (Family Photography)

I’ve known Shawn and Joy for a long time – we met when they were just dating back in college at Cal Poly, SLO. We did a lot together back in the day, then went our separate ways, and only recently have rekindled our old friendships now that life has brought us back on the same U.S. Coast and within driving distance of each other. The Jackmans brought their three kids (Summer, Pierce and Julia) down to Santa Cruz for the day so we could catch up, and of course get a few family photos in there as well.

We walked from our house to Seabright Beach, which is always a fun place to shoot. We did a few formal group shots of the whole family, then focused on smaller groups and individual shots later. It’s always best to get the big groups out of the way first as the kids tend to get more out of hand with every passing minute – especially at the beach!

We probably only spent about 30 minutes shooting, but we got some keepers, some of which I’d like to share with you below. If you’d like to see more, please visit www.GoodEyePhotography.com.
