Any engagement shoot (heck, any shoot) that ends with beer and pizza with a nice couple is a WIN+ in my book. Rebekah and Anthony were kind enough to treat me to such after their e-session, so I suppose they enjoyed themselves during our time together. Long-time Fremont-area residents (they can trace their Fremont lineage back to the 1800s I think), they decided on exploring the Niles Blvd. section of Fremont for their session. It’s probably the oldest part of the town, backed up against the hills and having a forgotten, nostalgic feel to it. Half the stores sell antiques (you must check out the MANtiques store if you visit), and there’s an “El Camino Real Bar” that is in fact no where near El Camino Real… There’s also a (somewhat creepy) plethora of Charlie Chapman memorabilia, but we restrained ourselves from including ol’ Charlie in our pictures (but couldn’t resist the Dog Do’s storefront for obvious reasons).
Anthony photographs architecture professionally and Rebekah has an artistic flair, so they are both attracted to the old brick buildings, the train depot, and the variety of textures and colors and ambiance to be found in the neighborhood. Since I’d never been there, I was seeing it with a fresh eye, a challenge I’m always down to accept 🙂 Here’s my favorite photos from the session, there’s more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Man I just *love* engagement sessions! Each one is different, and I never have a preconceived idea of how each is going to play out. It simply evolves from the subtle feedback I get as I start to work with a couple. One thing is pretty consistent, though – they are almost always romantic, fun, and sexy. The ironic thing is that most couples, including Tony and Danielle, explain to me how they aren’t that comfortable in front of the camera – well you fooled me! You guys did a great job, took directions well and even improvised which is so great! Our first location for the engagement shoot was Covered Bridge Park in Felton; I’ve shot here several times before, but with suggestions from Danielle we got some sweet shots I wouldn’t have even considered – like the ones of the two of them looking at each other from different windows. After an hour or so at the park, we drove about 15 minutes to Loch Lomond, which is a man-made lake that, when you pull up to it, feels like you’re up in Tahoe, and definitely not the Santa Cruz mountains. I’m definitely going to have to revisit this location! Below are some of my favorite photos from the e-session, if you’d like to see all 127 edited photos, please visit www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Can you say adorable strawberry blonde kids?!? I met Amy, Greg, and their cute kidlets Isabelle and Aiden for their family portrait session at Seascape Beach (this section also known as “beer can” or “beer bottle” beach to the college kids…). But today the beach was refuse-free and we took advantage, running around, being crazy, getting a little wet and just having a good ol’ time. After realizing how fun family photos could be, Amy wished she’d called me earlier. Well, remember that in a couple years Amy!
Isabelle is the consummate fairy princess, showing off her dance moves and flowing, flaming-red hair. Aiden is your typical little boy, who prefers tossing rocks over locks 🙂 They posed for a couple photos, but most of the session was pure candid fun. I love getting the parents to run with the kids; in this case it resulted in some truly priceless pics. Enjoy my favorites below, and check out the rest at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

This couple is simply adorable, from the moment I met them (only six weeks ago), I knew we’d all try our hardest to make our working relationship happen. When you connect with someone right away, you really hope the business side of things don’t get in the way. Jen and Steve are so great; from their eagerness to work with me, their trust in my talents, and of course their comfort with and love for one another – it really makes my job a breeze. They opted for a Capitola engagement shoot – the main target was under the pier on the beach, but I started us up higher on the hill so we could walk around and explore a little. The weather was gorgeous and they were a joy to shoot. I hope you enjoy my faves below, more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Tiia and Justin are a really sweet couple, if not a little shy on the outset. I think they felt comfortable with me, though, and let some of their true personality shine through. I know it’s not easy when a complete stranger tells you how to touch your fiance, where this hand and that arm should go, and – oh, don’t forget to “act natural” (ha!); so when I can do all that and still get some keepers I always consider it a personal victory. This was the second engagement session I had at Nisene within a couple weeks, so I had to force myself to try to explore off the beaten path (literally and figuratively) to keep it fresh – if for no one else but for me. I think that’s important with any routine – no matter how familiar you are with a location or a person, you need to shake things up to keep those creative juices from drying out. Here are a few of my favorite engagement photos from Tiia and Justin’s e-session @ Nisene Marks in Aptos, California – feel free to browse the whole gallery at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

I love it when my clients have the same sarcastic funny bone as myself, there’s always those few first minutes of meeting someone where you’re treading on unknown territory, afraid of saying something off-base that will offend the other. Sometimes I catch myself going a little too far with my deadpan humor, and have to remember that not everyone appreciates the fine nuances of what I consider to be witty charm (just ask my wife!). Well with Michelle and Aren, I knew we were on the same wavelength in the first 30 seconds of our engagement shoot at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. They are playful, funny, and we all spent a lot of time laughing as much as posing and shooting. This makes for great “posed candids” as I like to call them. Engagement shoots should be romantic, dare-I-say sexy, and most of all fun. I think it’s the secret sauce that attracts clients to my work, and probably why so many of the people that hire me tend to have that same funny bone. Go figure. Anyway, here’s my favorite photos below, check out the rest at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Megan and Stephen are another couple I’d only met on Skype – since they live in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ironically the day we shot their engagement session at Uvas Canyon County Park (near Morgan Hill), I left on a road trip with my family to Scottsdale. I guess we just had to visit each other’s home towns!! These guys have awesome personalities to match their good looks, and I trusted them as much as they trusted me to get great photos of them – this was the first time ever I let a client help me carry some gear. Most everyone offers, but I always decline (it’s a good workout). However we climbed some serious hills during this shoot to get to the waterfalls at the top, so I finally, begrudgingly, gave up my heavy backpack to Megan. Kidding… Stephen helped me out 🙂 I thoroughly enjoyed risking my gear in some pretty precarious situations, and overall just had a great time getting to know these guys before we venture on to the big day. I hope you enjoy some of my favorites below, you can see all the photos from Megan and Stephen’s engagement shoot at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

I’d only met Jessie and Evan over a Skype conversation back in December, so it was cool to get a real face to face with them for their engagement shoot at Nisene Marks in Aptos. They both work in education over in Oakland, and both possess that great balance of wisdom and wit that must help in their daily interactions with the snarky high schoolers. My favorite part of the shoot while walking around the forest that beautiful day was when they whipped out the superhero shirts. Don’t get me wrong, I love shooting couples cuddling and kissing, but it’s even better when you can capture their true personality behind the curtains. The fact that Evan used to be a professional wrestler added the perfect sprinkling of irony to the overall experience. I hope you enjoy the photos, here are a few of my favorites. This is the second engagement session I’ve had at Vasona park that involved motorcycles in some way another – must be all that open space that just begs for large props! Ryan is a self-professed gearhead, and was happy to see my roll up in my modified mustang – it helps when us guys speak the same language. I really enjoyed getting to know Rachel and her fiance over the next two hours and three outfit changes. Vasona is a huge place, and is always changing with the seasons. The one thing that’s constant, though, is all the birds (and their crap). We had to be careful where we stepped and sat – especially me since I only brought the one outfit 🙂
Enjoy my favorites from their engagement session below, there’s more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com if you’re one of the moms reading this and need to see *every* picture!

If you’ve ever been to Uvas Canyon County Park, you know just how far off the beaten path it is. While technically in Morgan Hill, it’s at least 40 minutes from that town. But man it is totally worth the drive! I met Lilly and Chris at the state park on the first sunny day after days of rain, and the forest was just exploding with lushness (is that even a word?). Lilly’s footwear epitomized fashion over practicality, but it gave her lots of excuses to hitch a ride on Chris’ back. Luckily we hiked up steep hills, across wet rocks and around enthusiastic waterfalls without getting drenched or turning any ankles.
Although Lilly is petite and Chris is taller than average, they really fit together well and were not at all awkward to pose. I had fun getting creative with some of the shots to give Lilly a little more physical dominance than she’s probably used to. Shooting in forests can often be challenging, but I bring lots of heavy equipment with me to make sure the lighting is perfect no matter what. At the end of our engagement session when I was shooting closeups of the engagement ring, I turned Chris into my lighting assistant and Lilly into a videographer – how cool are these guys? Looking forward to their wedding in a few months, but here’s a few of my favorites of them so far (all pics are here):

My first wedding of the year! The only stressful part was waking up at 4:30am to ensure I could get to the UC Berkeley Campus at 8:30am in time for the formals! Josiah and Angela love old, well-conceived architecture, so it makes sense that their engagement session was held among the giant pillars of the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and that their formals would take place among the neat old buildings on the UC Berkeley Campus. After checking the formals off the wedding to-do list, we headed down the street to St. John’s Presbyterian Church for the full mass and wedding ceremony. After a few more formals we headed down to Scott’s Seafood @ Jack London Square where a tent was set up for the hundreds of wedding guests. Angela and Josiah have TONS of friends through school and ministry alike, and we enjoyed three separate singing/dancing performances from these people. It was SO neat, you can tell how much A&J have impacted everyone’s lives for the better. Please enjoy my favorite photos from the day below, there’s more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Ed needed some casual shots of himself in a variety of outfits. Luckily he lives across the street from our destination – the always lovely Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Most of the shots were pretty tight, so I didn’t incorporate much of the wide architectural shots I sometimes employ for engagement sessions at this location. It’s important for subjects to feel comfortable with me, so I try to engage in conversation as much as possible to keep the focus off my big cameras and lighting equipment. I know it’s totally intimidating, especially out in public where spectators are a given, and Ed did a great job for the hour or so that we spent taking pictures. He’s a great guy, and I hope some of the photos are usable for him. Here’s a few of my favorites:

Kathy needed an updated headshot for professional use, so we met at the Museum of Art and History in downtown Santa Cruz. There’s a courtyard around back with some interesting backgrounds for neutral to organic and industrial looks. This was a super-quick portrait session as the need was very specific and the timing was last-minute.

Jewelry photography is probably one of the hardest types of photography there is. It shouldn’t be, I mean the stuff doesn’t move, and you don’t have to worry about it throwing a tantrum or anything – but working in really close simply pushes the physics of optics to the point where the tiniest camera movement will shift the focal point of your shot. The depth of field is so shallow, even at the smallest apertures, that focus becomes a real challenge. And then there’s lighting – shiny things are tough to properly light, especially when your camera is so physically close to the subject. Anyways, here’s my best effort for this client, I think a few shots came out well.
