Jessie + Evan (Wedding Photography) @ Ramekins Culinary School, Sonoma

After their rockin’ superhero engagement session at Nisene Marks forest, I was anxious to see what this enthusiastic and fun-filled couple had planned for their wedding way up in Sonoma. I was a little concerned about how good a culinary school would look for a wedding, but once I got to Ramekins and scoped out the property, I was pleasantly surprised at how great a wedding venue it is! It’s modern, spacious, and the opportunities to dress it up or down are limitless. Read on below for the highlights of this wedding via my favorite photos + commentary, or hop over to www.GoodEyePhotography.com to sift through all 1,000+ photos.

Ramekins has some great props laying around for us photographers to geek out on. Hence, apples – and rustic, bound weed-things. Hey, it’s all about texture, color and composition, right?

Aw, fork and spoon door handles. Cute. Here’s Jessie and Evan getting ready in their separate suites. I think hers was nicer. Check out that fun wedding dress! Oh, and I stick the rings in a waffle iron – because I can.Ramekins Wedding Photos - Sonoma

Sassty! Sexy! Jessie is the whole package, and picked the perfect dress to show off her vivacious personality. You can also see how colorful she’s dressed her bridesmaids. There’s lots of color in this wedding, just wait…Ramekins Wedding Photos - Sonoma

I love the quality of light while Jessie arranges the veil. Beautiful. Then we head to the park downtown for the First Look and some bride and groom formals.Ramekins Wedding Photos - Sonoma

We blindfold Evan with a tie while Jessie sneaks up from behind. Surprise! “Damn!”Ramekins Wedding Photos - Sonoma

We walk around and take photos at different locations in the park. Jessie and Evan practice their rehearsed dance in the parking lot.Ramekins Wedding Photos - Sonoma

Love these stair shots on the side of a nearby building. It was really stuffy and hot out, so the more I could keep the couple in the shade, the better. Me? I’m in the sun – but I’m also not wearing a suit. That top photo would look great in a magazine spread.Ramekins Wedding Photos - Sonoma

The guests are shielded from the sun’s warm rays, and Jessie’s dad gives Evan a high-five – awesome! Their closest friends all take part in the ceremony, making it really special for the couple.Ramekins Wedding Photos - Sonoma

Check out the color! So so pretty.Ramekins Wedding Photos - Sonoma

Jamie + Greg (Wedding Photography) @ Willow Heights Mansion, Morgan Hill

I first met this lovely couple during their engagement shoot at Nisene Marks forest in Aptos, California. They’re a really great looking as you can see, and have quirky, fun personalities as an added bonus. They chose Willow Heights Mansion in Morgan Hill for their wedding venue, and to be honest, I wasn’t too thrilled about shooting there. It had been a couple years since my last visit, and in my memory it was starting to look a little worn around the edges. It turns out the mansion was bought last year and totally revamped/modernized into the perfect wedding venue! All neutral colors on the walls and ceiling (great for us photographers who rely on bouncing light off them), and classy, classy, classy. Modern decor, lovely chandeliers, a unified theme tied everything together. So yeah, next time I book a wedding at Willow Heights I’ll jump up and down with excitement!

When I walked into the crowded bridal suite, Jamie stood out – just as pretty as I’d remembered – and she hadn’t even had her hair or makeup done yet! Diego was assisting me for the day (even letting me borrow his fancy new camera!), holding my lightstand often – which was a blessing as the Morgan Hill winds persisted pretty much all day. But we made that wind work for us whenever possible – like, “Hey, your veil just blew into Greg’s face, just wrap it around and hold it over him!” Jamie and Greg’s playful nature made for some really fun photos, and the family and friends were great to work with as well. Lots of really handsome/beautiful people here, kinda like hanging out with models 🙂

Ok, so yes, I must write down the moments I’ll remember from Greg and Jamie’s fabulous Willow Heights Wedding Extravaganza… that sexy dress, that cool “melted” chandelier, that backlit angel, the magazine cover couple, fish lips!, the groomsmen dropping Greg, and how he saved it with a couple one-armed pushups (sick!), the proud daddy, how Jamie “really” pushed Greg into tying the knot, the three single ladies who fought valiantly for the bouquet – and were rewarded by having it split three ways by the wedding coordinator, and of course the improvised limbo on the dance floor using a groomsman’s tie. There’s so many great photos from this wedding, but I’ve selected my favorites to show in the photoboards below. If you’d like to see all the photos, check out www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Astra + Steve (Engagement Photography) @ Panther Beach, Santa Cruz

I’ve known Astra for over a decade, so I was really excited when she’d told me she got engaged to this awesome guy named Steve. He makes her so happy, you can just see it in their eyes when they look at each other. Of course they’ve got some serious chemistry going on, which I fully capitalized on during our engagement shoot at Panther Beach near Santa Cruz. I love this location for its unique red rocks, natural bridge, tunnel and of course the relative privacy as it’s not really on the map. Many locals don’t even know about this gem of a beach (shhh!).

Astra and Steve brought their kids along to integrate in some of their photos – and by kids I mean cute little dogs. We had so much fun practicing dips, dancing, and different intimate poses. We stayed til after the sun went down and enjoyed the beautiful afterglow of the evening. I edited over 200 photos from this shoot (see www.GoodEyePhotography.com), but I posted my favorite 30-something photos below. Enjoy and comment!

Recent “Engagement” Posts:

Amy + Elliott (Wedding Photography) @ Perry House, Monterey

Amy and Elliott had a sexy, romantic, fun Capitola Beach engagement shoot in October 2011. It was overcast that day, so it is only appropriate that their July 2012 wedding would have cloudy skies over Monterey as well. But the weather didn’t dampen the mood on this shining couple. They chose the recently remodeled Perry House for their venue, and I must say it’s such a perfect blend of outdoor patio areas, multi-level porches, gorgeously-furnished suite and large indoor dance floor. They’ve got a permanent outdoor wood-fired brick oven which made for wicked-awesome additions to the dinner fare, and all kinds of little nooks and crannies for small groups to hang out around stone-circle fire pits. Amy and Elliott are so accepting of each other, I have no doubt they’ll enjoy all the blessings of marriage and a long life together. Their chemistry simply made my job easier – thanks guys! A few things I’m not likely to forget about this wedding: fruity rings  (okay, that was my idea…), dramatic bridal party portraits, perfect recessional bubbles, fun cocktail straws/party favors, passionate love, the staring girls, the best man (also here, here, and oh, here), and who could forget Elliott’s great grandma who wouldn’t have missed this wedding for the world.

Enjoy my personal favorites below, I think they tell the story of the day if you only have a couple minutes to look. If you’ve got several hours to kill, check out the 1,000+ photos at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

New Dishes (Food Photography) by Executive Chef John Hart at Ducca Restaurant, Westin Hotel, San Francisco

The Westin Hotel in San Francisco is sporting an awesome new executive chef these days. His name is John Hart, and he’s sure to win your heart through your stomach if you visit Ducca in the coming months. After an hour or so of shooting some commercial and casual portraits outside the hotel, he retreated to his kitchen to get some real work done. Over the next several hours he presented impeccable plate after plate of some great looking americana fare. If you haven’t eaten yet, I apologize in advance for your rumbling tummy. Here’s a few of my favorites from this morning’s food shoot in San Francisco:

Executive Chef John Hart (Portrait Photography) @ The Westin, San Francisco

The Westin Hotel in San Francisco has a new Executive Chef in their restaurant, and he’s making some tasty changes. But first, we took a few portraits of John, both in his chef’s whites as well as some more casual clothing. I enjoyed talking with John about how he came into the industry, about how awesome his wife is, and how they both love (and own) parrots. Here’s a few photos from this morning’s portrait session that I thought turned out pretty well. Thanks John!

Marianne + Rick (Wedding Photography) @ Villa Montalvo, Saratoga

I first met Marianne and Rick for their engagement session at Vasona in May 2011. The first thing they busted out were their matching streetbikes, so I knew this was going to be a fun, exciting couple. We all got along so well, I was bummed it would be more than a year until I saw them again. But as time always does, that year flew by and before I knew it I was meeting up with Marianne at Villa Montalvo – one of Saratoga’s most breathtaking wedding venues. She was in a playful, laid back mood – not succumbing to the stresses of the wedding day. My second shooter Sam Fontejon proceeded to meld into the surrounding, both interacting with guests and capturing all those candid moments. There were many memorable moments throughout the day, but I’ll always remember their bobblehead/motorcycle wedding topper, Marianne’s beautiful bridal shawl (that she made herself), and of course the most epic garter removal scene where the boys handcuffed Rick’s hands behind his back to ensure he only used his mouth. Awesome.

Here’s a few of my favorites that I feel tell the story of Marianne and Rick’s epic Villa Montalvo wedding; enjoy the photos and if this is not enough for you, check out every single last photo at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Michelle + Aren (Wedding Photography) @ Inn Marin, Novato

I first met Michelle and Aren at their Palace of Fine Arts engagement session in San Francisco of April 2012. We clicked immediately – I think it’s a common zany sense of humor, or just the fact that we’re all happy, go-with-the-flow people – but regardless I felt a connection to this couple and it really helped the photo-making process effortless and fun for everyone. The wedding day was about 100-degrees at the Inn Marin (in Novato), but the bride was hotter. She still had the goofy charm that no doubt is what attracts so many friends to her, but she was downright glistening on her wedding day. Okay, so we all were, but Michelle was stunning in her simple, yet elegant gown. Aren and the guys were striking in their black suits and red vests, and the blue of the Bud Light cans brought out just the right amount of complementary color 🙂 The crown Jewel of the Inn Marin as a wedding venue is the giant (oak?) tree strung with lanterns and surrounded by a circular wooden deck. A rustic fountain nearby completes the idyllic setting for a wonderful wedding indeed.

A few things I’ll remember from Michelle and Aren’s Inn Marin wedding: cute in curlers!, the groomsmen and their engraved knives, Michelle’s emerald ring and her colorful bouquet, this adorable girl contemplating life next to the fountain, flowery-explosion recessional, romance in the garden, this dad man-handling his kids, Aren making some questionable moves on his plate of food, hand-rest head, the lemon jugglers, the totally awesome tear-jerker video made by the bride’s brother, Aren being Aren, the father-daughter dance, nose frosting, and of course that awesome tree.

I’ve selected a few stand-out photos from Michelle and Aren’s wedding that I feel tell the story of the day in the most compact and time-saving way. They are displayed on the photo boards below. If time is your friend, and you’d like to spend a couple hours perusing all the photos from their wedding, I’ve organized them just for you at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Kelly + Steve (Wedding Photography) @ Bridges Golf Club, San Ramon

My first shoot with Kelly and Steve was during their Three Mile beach engagement session last year, and I knew these two were madly in love from that short time alone with them. Kelly is one of those people that loves details, and her wedding was no exception – from the impeccable dining arrangements to the absolutely gorgeous flowers (by her lovely Aunt Jackie), the lovely blinged-out cake to the fun photo booth props – all were catered to with a clear eye for design, color and good taste. Between the videographers, myself and my talented second-shooter Sam Fontejon, it was somewhat of a barely-controlled media circus – for the getting ready-stage, it seemed like organized chaos, yet Kelly kept her calm and helped everyone else do the same. Everyone was easygoing and friendly – a great way to start the day.

Kelly and I had talked before about some unique shots we both wanted to accomplish, and I’m happy to say that we were able to get those done and more amidst the craziness of W-Day. We had great fun posing in the fountain at Mom’s house, and once we arrived at the ceremony/reception location (Bridges Golf Club, San Ramon), we got some classic shots of Kelly mock-hitting a golf club off Steve’s prone face. I love it! We got some more amazing B&G photos in the tunnels, the golf cart, and a few shots “in the rough.”

What I will really remember from this wedding was how pretty much EVERYONE hit up the dance floor – old and young alike. I saw one dad practically do the splits among a circle of cheering dancers, and then another dad do some hip-hop breakdancing moves that made me sore just observing. Sam and I couldn’t help but dance along with everyone else while somehow shooting at the same time. What a blast. The tunnel of sparklers held by the guests for the B&G exit was a perfect end to the day, what a beautiful couple. Thanks so much for choosing GoodEye and big props to my buddy Sam for his second-shooter/photo booth awesomeness.

Here’s some photoboards of some of my favorites from the day, check out all the rest at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Stephanie + Kevin (Engagement Photography) @ Quicksilver Almaden Park, San Jose

Some couples feel uncomfortable in front of the camera. Asking them to add a little PDA into the mix is almost uncalled for. Then there’s Stephanie and Kevin, who epitomize good chemistry and only reluctantly take their hands off each other 🙂 They warmed to my style of posed candids really well, and I think they’ve got way more showmanship than even they knew. I really enjoyed walking through the hills of Quicksilver Almaden Park in South San Jose, getting to know them and of course capture what I see to be their true natures. They’ve got a lotta love and good humor to boot, I can’t wait to shoot their Felton Guild wedding later this year. Here’s some of my faves from the e-session, more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Stephanie + Chris (Destination Wedding Photography) @ Coffee Farm Estates, Ka’anapali, Maui, Hawaii

For Stephanie and Chris, Maui is home. Steph teaches art to little kids, and Chris is an executive chef at a local restaurant. Between the two, they created a wedding that was artistically creative and infused with delicious food. About 70 family members and friends flew in to add to the 30 locals for this larger-than-usual Hawaiian destination wedding. Finding a venue that could accommodate the guest count (without resorting to, well, a big expensive resort) was their first challenge. Luckily they discovered a private property smack in the middle of the Coffee Farms Estates – it’s up the mountain from downtown Ka’anapali, surrounded by lush coffee fields with a panoramic ocean view. The house is gorgeous, with beautiful landscaping all around and an infinity pool that sparkled like a glowing gem after sunset.

Stephanie’s charming, accommodating personality made my job SO easy, and even though Chris is not a huge fan of photos he really made an effort and honestly I think he had a great time in spite of himself. Stephanie had grand plans of shuttling the whole bridal party around to multiple locations for pre-ceremony formals; as a local she knew exactly where she wanted to get shots taken. Even though we got lost in the coffee field maze, we managed to hit up each spot with time to spare.

The wind was consistently gusty at 30-40 mph, but Stephanie’s short hair and the ladies’ up-dos made the shoots possible. And then there was the rain… well ordinarily the rain and wind would really put a damper on things, but everyone’s spirits were high and we just rolled with it. We moved the ceremony to the tent, and were rewarded afterwards with breaking clouds and a stunning double rainbow over the house that I of course took full advantage of. After that, the winds seemed to calm down, the rain dissipated, and the dancing and partying resumed in full force. My associate Sam and I had so much fun at this wedding, and after a fair amount of prodding from Stephanie we put the cameras down at 10pm and spent the last hour dancing and partying with everyone. Man I love this job.

Here’s some photoboards of my favorite photos from Chris and Stephanie’s wedding. Feel free to leave a comment below, and if you’d like to see all the photos and order a print or two, please visit www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Megan + Stephen (Wedding Photography) @ Private Residence, Pebble Beach

Megan and Stephen live in Scottsdale, Arizona, so when we first “met” it was online, via Skype – which is a great way for me to meet out-of-town brides planning destination weddings. We met for real back in April when we had an awesome engagement session at Uvas Canyon County Park near Morgan Hill. To this date, Stephen is the only person I’ve ever allowed to help me carry some of my equipment – the hike was uphill the whole time, so I was thankful for the assistance at the end!

Fast forward to May 27, 2012 where I met the couple at the house they’d rented for the big day, right across the street from Pebble Beach Golf Course. There were golf balls littering the yard, which made me a little wary about shooting without a helmet – but everyone made it through the evening unscathed. This was a very intimate affair, and I was only there for 4 fours or so, but we managed to get tons of great photos – many more B&G formals than I’m usually allowed time for; and lots of candid shots of guests which is so much easier when there’s 40 people instead of 200. Here’s some photo-boards of my favorite photos from this destination wedding, I hope you enjoy them – please comment if you do. Kirby Prep High School – Venetian Nights (Prom Photography) @ Chaminade, Santa Cruz

I’ve photographed tons of events – corporate retreats, black tie dinners, company parties, heck – even my daughter’s Girl Scouts father/daughter dance; but somehow I’ve yet to shoot an actual high school prom. A past client called me up a couple weeks ago and asked if I was interested in shooting her daughter’s high school spring formal that had a Venetian theme to it. Of course I said yes, so my wife Becky helped me with our photo booth for the night. The parents had purchased and set up a panoramic scene of a Venetian boat canal with a cardboard boat the kids could sit on in front. I had a great time with the kids, here’s a few photos from the evening – more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Laurie R. King – Mystery Author (Bay Area Portrait Photography)

Bay Area mystery writer Laurie R. King needed some new publicity photos to adorn her book coming out this fall, so I came to her home for a few studio-like and natural portraits. I enjoyed talking with her and am excited to read my new signed copy of The Beekeeper’s Apprentice (I do love a good mystery). I set up a black backdrop in the living room for the first set, then we took a few more outside around the property. Avoiding reflections on glasses can sometimes be challenging, and this was no exception. But when glasses are a part of your persona, there’s just no way to avoid them. Luckily I got a few nice portraits of Laurie where the reflections weren’t too bad. Here’s a couple of my favorites:

Ariana (Bay Area Newborn Photography)

I don’t shoot a lot of newborns, not because I don’t like it (I do!), it’s just not a market I’ve really targeted. But it’s SO fun – I never thought I’d go to my guy photographer friends asking to borrow newborn hats, blankies and other accessories. But I did. And I don’t care. I shot Danny and Rachelle’s wedding almost exactly one year ago, and I was so happy they asked me to capture the fruits of their labor (literally). When you find the right photographer, it really is a long-term relationship! I quickly went through the photos when I got home today so I could post a little sneak peek from the session. San Jose City Hall unarguably exhibits beautiful architecture, with sweeping, curving lines and elegant glass and cement materials. What better backdrop for some business portraits? I met some of the crew from the Lucina Health Foundation at the curved staircase/ramp to get some photos of four of the team members. Really nice people that took some great portraits. National Hispanic University Faculty (Business Portrait Photography) @ San Jose

I was hired to shoot the 2012 Awards Ceremony at National Hispanic University in San Jose, and since I was there, we took advantage of the time to get some nice headshots of some of the faculty that showed up to the event early (ha! that’ll teach ya!!). Even though they weren’t expecting to have their photos taken, they were dressed up for the event and after a little coaxing, I was able to get some nice, quick portraits of them. My rule for headshots – your best expressions are going to happen in the first 10 to 15 seconds. If you’re not prepared for that *real* smile (or if you’re a total bore to be around), you’re going to fail – or at least not get the best expression that person is capable of presenting. Of course I have a few tricks up my sleeve (no, I’m not referring to the tequila in my camera bag), but interacting with your subject is paramount. Also, being at ease yourself will project good vibes to your subject, helping set them at ease.

Each of the portraits in the image below were taken in about 20 seconds per person. Not bad eh? Oh, and the background is a wall in the library; I almost never need to bring backdrops to get a traditional portrait look when I’m on-location. More on that in another post, I think.

June 13, 2012 - 6:10 pm Jenna Magen Garcia - Considering I got roped into doing new headshots for my company.. I had to come find your post... natural lighting and a photog who lost all their mojo.. hoping your good vibes help me out... though Ii already told them that if they hate them.. I'll give the name of a REAL PHOTOGRAPHER... LOL... so be prepared! ;-)

Alethea, Mike and Fam (Family Portrait Photography) @ Capitola Beach

Large families can be challenging to shoot – there’s that many more eyeballs and expressions that have to be open and happy at the exact same moment. Add to that the unpredictable wind, surf and lighting for an on-location outdoors shoot, and you have a lot to manage as a photographer! I’m always up for pretty much any challenge, though, so I was happy to meet Alethea, Mike and their families while they were visiting from Hawaii. They decided Capitola Beach would be a great place to get some extended family photos as they were raised there and have so many memories at the beach. Under the wharf is always a great place to start, it’s amazing how the water appears green there – I suppose it’s due to the sky being blocked in the reflection. Everyone was so nice, and we stuckl to the general beach area around the wharf so we didn’t have to do too much walking with the large group. Here’s a few of my favorites below.

David and Ranvir (Business Portrait / Headshot Photography) @ Sash Mill, Santa Cruz

About This Post

David and Ranvir needed some new business portraits for their law firm – they were looking for something a little edgy, a little atypical, so I was happy to oblige. Their office is at the Sash Mill in Santa Cruz, so there’s a lot of locations that work great for photos there. Lots of metal, industrial-looking backdrops as well as a natural park area to get a little variety. We shot at high noon, so I had my work cut out for me creating some dramatic lighting. Here’s some of my favorites from the shoot, more to see at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

About Chris (GoodEye)
Chris Schmauch thinks every business person deserves to have an excellent, professional portrait. Your online photo (think: LinkedIn) is increasingly the “first impression” – and we all know how important that is. A GoodEye portrait is sure to stand out among the sea of crappy selfies or point and shoot photos! Based in Santa Cruz, but traveling all over the Bay Area and beyond, consider taking advantage of Chris’ talent to capture great photos of you and your staff.

Valerie + Mark (Engagement Photography) @ Central Park, Santa Clara

Even Google Maps has a tough time finding Central Park in Santa Clara – my iPhone kept insisting I must drive to New York City if I wanted to meet Valerie and Mark for their engagement session! Luckily we all found our way there – even if we did start on opposite sides of this expansive city park. A fun, playful couple should get engagement photos at a playground, and that’s just what we did. We had to kick off a couple kids, but it was for a good cause (…kidding park moms, we didn’t harrass your adorable offspring).

There’s a slight height difference between Mark and Valerie, so I busted out all the tricks I could think of to give V the height advantage – or at least downplay it. I’m really happy with the end result, feel free to check out my favorites below – or view the entire session at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.
