This professional businesswoman needed some updated photos of her dressed in professional clothing at an outdoor beach location. Because she’s based in the Santa Cruz area, she decided to have her portraits taken at Seabright beach near the cement “jacks” and lighthouse. We started with the more formal clothing, then changed to a more casual outfit for some lifestyle photos.

I love repeat family portrait clients – it means I am continuing to serve my community well, and clients are excited about what I can produce for them. It’s not easy having family photos taken (I know, I’ve got three kids myself), so I appreciate the effort made by small families like Sam and Shaina here to get dressed up, take time off from work, and meet me at the beach to take some photos, regardless of how crazy their day/week/year is going. I pride myself in being quick, efficient, and getting the best side of peoples’ personalities without being forced or awkward. It’s just a matter of patience and experience, I think. It was great having Shaina’s parents and sibling’s family out for this year’s family portrait session – a greater challenge, for sure, but worth it!
Below are some of my favorite photos from the family photography session. Thanks for checking it out!

Monica, Bob and kids are regular clients (and friends), we shoot at least once together every year. This year, I finally got Monica to step outside her usual location (Rio Del Mar/Seacliff Beach) and explore a totally different location for their family portraits in Aptos, California. We settled on the forest of Nisene Marks as the destination for their family / maternity photo session. The forest is dark, especially near winter, but I brought my lighting gear along to ensure magazine-worthy photographs. It was an enjoyable experience for all, looking forward to meeting that baby bump in 2016!
Below are some of my favorite photos from the family photography session, laid out album spread-style. Enjoy!

Love, love, love photographing twins – this little girl and her brother are simply adorable. Were there tears? Well, yeah – comes with the territory, but I was patient and the parents were easygoing, so we got some lovely photos of this family at Capitola Beach in, you guessed it – Capitola!
Below are some of my favorite photos from the family photography session. Thanks!

City Hall in San Francisco is a jaw-dropping example of fine architecture, so shooting engagements and weddings at this location is always a creative challenge I’m excited to embrace. The spaces are huge, and there’s always a dozen other photographers doing their thing at the same time, so capturing the spaces with your couple without showing all the other people milling about is particularly difficult. I love using off-camera lighting, and at this location this technique can truly elevate the kind of photo you can take there – although it takes way more time and effort, as I’m often shooting from a different floor than my couples are on. Luckily Jamie and Will were completely receptive to my ideas, and did pretty much anything I asked (I try not to abuse the privilege). After the brief civil ceremony in one of the offices downstairs, we explored the four levels of the building and various spaces (including the elevator!). I’m really happy with the photos we got from this engagement shoot.
Enjoy my favorite photos below – and please feel free to leave a comment or share!

- If you don’t think you have what it takes to look like one of the couples on this page – you’re wrong! With a little coaching and a couple shots of tequila (I jest…), you can get results just like all the other “normal” non-model people you see here. I’ve been shooting engaged couples for quite a few years, and I absolutely love it. It’s a challenge that I embrace – and let’s be honest, you two will be way more cooperative than a couple of cranky toddlers – right?

For a couple as adventurous as Pete and Erin, tying the knot in one of the most outdoor-sy, gorgeous landscap-y, beautimous locations in the world was kind of a given (and forgive my propensity for made-up words). Yes, Yosemite Valley was the ideal location for this destination wedding – and more specifically the historic Ahwahnee Hotel nestled in the heart of the valley.
Our schedules and physical locations prevented us from shooting a pre-wedding engagement session, so I went up a day early and hung out with the families at Glacier Point for their informal get-together. It’s got amazing views of half dome and the entirety of the valley below. Erin and Pete had reserved the outdoor amphitheater for their picnic, along with a few speeches from the best man and maid of honor. IT was a great way to start the festivities, and a good chance for me to meet the key people on both sides of the family.
We all stayed at Yosemite Lodge, which is a stone’s throw from the Ahwahnee. Saturday morning, I met up with Erin at her Ahwahnee cottage, capturing some getting ready candids as well as getting some great detail shots of her classy/minimal wedding dress + wedding rings with the bright orange carabiner (in true mountaineer fashion!). I met up with Pete and the guys a little later to capture their orange and blue outdoor vests as their signature look for this forest grove wedding.
As I do with most weddings these days, I organized a first-look for Erin and Pete, staging a special, intimate way for them to see each other for the first time in their wedding duds. After that special moment in the wedding grove, we transitioned to taking some great, romantic portraits of just the bride and groom around the property, focusing on the area near the rock bridge and river. We then met up with all the family and bridal party in the Yosemite Meadow for some breathtaking group photos with soaring rock cliffs in the background.
The ceremony itself was behind the Ahwahnee in the Wedding Grove, officiated by Erin and Pete’s close friend – who was simply hilarious and touching at the same time. We had a few deer attending the wedding – I mean, we were in the middle of nature people. I think they were after the flowers… After the lovely ceremony, we took a few more family photos and then it was party time!
The seated dinner took place in the Solarium (at the rear of the Ahwahnee), with dancing and treats in adjoining rooms. It was such a fairytale experience for everyone, and a joy for me personally. Erin and Pete are truly soul mates, and even though they are both a little camera shy, they made for some amazing photos throughout the day. I wish you two the very best.
Below are some of my favorite photos – enjoy!

Well, where do I start? First off, this was kind of a family reunion for me – mostly consisting of Schmauchs that I’ve never met before, including the bride! This wedding was chock full of 3rd cousins (common great-great grandpa) and uncles/aunts, it was so great to see some familiar faces and meet new ones. Needless to say I felt right at home. Alan and Anna chose Bianchi Winery in Paso Robles, and I have to say it’s a gem of a venue hidden among the hills off 46. It was warm, but not scorching like the week before – so we all survived without any ambulance visits.
We got a ton of formals done before the wedding – bridal party, bride and groom – and even some family groups. I had such an amazing time with everyone; this was really a special one for me. Anna and Alan, you’re both amazing and I love how you had the flower girls announce your pregnancy after The Kiss – so special and sweet! There are a ton of great shots from this wedding, below are some of my favorites – enjoy!

Even though I live in the Santa Cruz area, I’m not super familiar with the UCSC campus, where Dylan and Caitlin first met. So a few screenshots of aerial satellite imagery preceded my meeting this adorable couple, so I knew exactly where Dylan and Caitlin’s special “bench with a view” was located. I arrived a little early to make sure I was in the right spot, and casually enjoyed the view while texting Dylan, awaiting their arrival. There were two benches with a view, so I sat in the rear about 30′ away from them as they sauntered up. I pretended to take photos of the scenery with my iPhone while they walked past me.
Dylan waited all of 40 seconds before promptly getting down on one knee and presenting the ring (family heirloom on Caitlin’s side, no less!). Caitlin was of course super excited – and validated after he’d been “acting weird” all week (she knew something was up…). Women’s sixth-sense aside, it was an amazing moment I was honored to capture. I spent a few minutes with them, getting a few photos and capturing the joyous glow. Enjoy my favorite photos below – and please feel free to leave a comment or share!

Small weddings in an intimate setting are such a joy to capture; you don’t have the crazy stress of a million things happening at once, and crowds of people to corral from one place to another. The bride and groom can actually sit and talk to all their guests, enjoying the moment throughout the day. Mary and John chose Elizabeth Gamble Garden Center in Palo Alto for their intimate celebration, and I have to admit this place is a hidden gem (and remarkably affordable, I’m told). If you can deal with no amplified music/voices (enter three string quartet), shutting down by 10pm, and inviting no more than 50 guests, this venue can be had for a steal. There are so many places to explore: the historical house, a myriad of gardens, gazebo, fountains, towering oaks – it’s so fun for us photographers and provides variety for the couples. I was excited to work again with Judi, owner of Taste-Full Events – one of the finest foodie-certified caterers in the Bay Area. When I found out she was handling things, I knew the food was gonna be out of this world! To top off the culinary treats, dessert was presented by TK – a Bay Area startup on pace to be the top artisan ice cream maker in town.
I had a lovely time with these two and am very happy with how their pictures turn out. Below are some of my favorite photos – enjoy!

I love when you can really get a sense for a couple’s personality through the photos in their engagement collection. Hannah and Graham are simply a delight together; Hannah’s got this radiant smile that always seems to be bursting to the surface, and Graham is the secret ingredient that unlocks the joy they share together. He’s a teacher, she’s a writer–it it stands to reason that they’d want to get a few photos in a library setting, a first for me. But I rolled with it, seeing how they reacted to my ideas and elaborating from there. I know these aren’t all original, never-done-before ideas, but the three of us made the exercise unique, fun and memorable. The librarian was super receptive to our shooting, if not downright excited about it. After we exhausted our novel ideas (see what I did there…), we headed down the street to Lovers Point to stoke the cauldron of love a little more. We explored the beach and boulders before wrapping it up with a solid pair of high-fives. Lovely time, genuine couple – can’t wait for their wedding this December at The Perry House.

Many Vietnamese and Chinese weddings incorporate tea ceremonies in addition to traditional western-style events – so they tend to be very LONG days, especially if you have a large bridal party that needs to get ready early. Mai and Hai’s wedding was no exception; I’m pretty sure they didn’t get much sleep the night before. But they were driven by adrenaline and love (and caffeine) and managed to look amazing and perform flawlessly throughout the long day. Everyone was so much fun to work with, and I was impressed by the staff at Sunol Valley Golf Club as they were juggling two other concurrent weddings that day (8-8 being super popular in Asian culture).
Below are some of my favorite photos – enjoy!
