If you want a really natural field / forest / creek setting, Henry Cowell in Felton is a great location. Just off Highway 9, there’s plenty of places to explore with any family. These guys couldn’t make it down to the creek (wrong footwear), but that didn’t stop them from getting some ultra-adorable family pics that will look great on their walls.

Wow guys, what an amazing way to start off the wedding season. No rain, but some cool clouds – gorgeous bride and dapper groom; and all the trimmings that make a wedding unique and wonderful. There were so many tears of joy and spontaneous bouts of laughter, I really had a good time with this crew. And they knew how to party! Everything from the getting ready to the last dance happened at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Gilroy, which is a great wedding venue in the Southernmost part of the Bay Area. Lisa and Corey are truly meant for one another, I can only hope my photos faithfully captured their magical day. Enjoy my favorites below.

Well it wasn’t quite the last day of the year, but darn close I’d say! On December 30th, 2013 I met up with Crystal at her bridal suite at the Lafayette Park Hotel. There was the usual organized chaos, but Crystal shone like her namesake among the hectic crowd. I quickly fell into first gear, getting detail shots of the dress and shoes while also getting a few candid photos. The hotel lobby had a huge Christmas tree set up, and I had scoped out the elevated walkway earlier as a great vantage point for some bridal party photos. As soon as the girls were photo-ready, we took some great shots there, then also a few in the outdoor inner courtyard, which had some amazing warm reflected light to work with in front of the central fountain. Next, we went a couple miles down the road to Lafayette Reservoir where the boys were hanging out; the plan being to do a first look, then get all the bridal party photos done before heading to Saint Monica Catholic Church in Moraga. Ben’s face was priceless as his bride-to-be snuck up behind them; his eyes lit up when he saw Crystal for the first time – I love capturing these special moments. Afterwards, I temped fate by getting bridal party portraits on a dock over the water (everyone stayed dry thank God), then experimented with a few ideas I’d concocted (on dry land). I’m especially proud of the crouching/jumping shot 🙂
The church was a full-mass affair, replete with some excellent singing by Ben’s brother, and some great words of wisdom from the priest, who clearly knows the couple well. After some in-church formals, we were ready to head off to the Brazilian Room in Tilden Park – and thank goodness for iPhones, because it’s a long curvy road to the top of Tilden Park – especially at night! It had been about 7 years since I last shot a wedding at the Brazilian Room, but it all came back to me as soon as I got there. As a wedding photographer, little things like where the outlets are, somehow get ingrained in the gray matter over time! Everyone was all-smiles, and I truly enjoyed the speeches, first dances, and all the little moments that create a unique wedding reception. One of the nicest touches were the ornaments hung on the Christmas tree in the room – all custom made with photos from Crystal and Ben’s engagement session – so creative and useful!
Before I left, I made sure to take a couple dramatic dipping shots of the newlyweds on the patio outside the Brazilian Room – since they’d gotten so good at it. Congrats guys – below are some of my favorite photos from the day, you can check them ALL out at www.GoodEyePhotography.com.

Even grown-up families need a good family portrait from time to time. We snuck this shoot in after Christmas, but before New Year’s. Luckily the weather was super nice, and this was more of a mini-shoot. We took photos along West Cliff Drive (near Fair Ave.) with the ocean in the background. A few of my favorites below!

Steve contacted me, saying he was going to propose to his girlfriend on the beach and wanted me to capture it –so cool! I suggested Capitola beach and suggested other details, down to which way he should face and the very spot to do it. There was only one chance to do it, no do-overs! The pretense was that they were going to go paddle boarding (they lugged all their gear down to the beach) so she wouldn’t be suspicious. He didn’t have much time to delay before she knew something was up, so he got right to it and got down on one knee. Oh, I forgot about my part in this – since this was an open beach, I had to be inconspicuous as well. Luckily there was a cool bird hanging out at the shore, so I pretended to be a fascinated wildlife photographer right up until I saw Steve initiate operation proposal out of the corner of my eye. At that point her focus was all on him, and I was free to transition into paparazzi mode. They were both all smiles of course, and after I went over and introduced myself, I brought out my lighting equipment (which I’d sequestered under the wharf in the shadows) and we took a few more formal portraits around the beach and under the wharf. Congratulations guys, and thanks for entrusting this special moment to G0odEye!

Sometimes a couple just clicks, and they don’t require a whole lot of interference on my part when it comes to fitting together in a photogenic way. I’m used to directing my couples a lot – where to put their hands, where to look, etc, but Lisa and Corey are naturals in front of the camera. Their natural abilities allowed me to focus more on the locations, lighting, and just exploring new ideas. If you’re familiar with my engagement sessions, you’ll see I follow a familiar route for most photos I take in Capitola – starting up by the mural and railroad tracks, and eventually making our way to the beach. But there’s nothing cookie-cutter about these two, and the photos are as unique as they are. Lovely couple, enjoy the pics!

South Bay Accent Magazine contacted me because they were doing a story on the best Tapas restaurants in the South Bay; I went to Ciano’s in Campbell, Donostia in Los Gatos, La Catalana and Picasso’s Tapas in downtown San Jose, and The Basin in Saratoga. The best part about food photography is working with amazing chefs to create mouth-watering images of their creations – and then eating it afterwards! Yum! Here’s a selection of the tapas I photographed for these South Bay five restaurants.

One of the great things about the Bay Area is our temperate weather; there are very few days I have to cancel, and can shoot steadily throughout the year. And so it was that I met up with Stevie and Angelo on this fine mid-December day for their engagement session in the forests around Henry Cowell. Now, this isn’t the most photogenic time of year for this area, the leaves have fallen, the fields are brown and yucky, and there are no flowers. But looking at the photos, you wouldn’t know any compromises had been made. I always assure people that it is them who are the superstars of my photos – and the environment almost always plays second fiddle. But I think most people don’t feel comfortable in the spotlight, and would rather melt into the background – and hope that that background is so pretty you won’t notice little ol’ them in the corner. That’s how people tend to feel going into one of my shoots, but by the end they are invigorated, impressed with their new modeling abilities, and confident that the photos will be great, even though they haven’t seen them yet.
Angelo brought along his 8yo daughter Anna, plus their adorable dog “Chewy” – who I think should be in commercials with those adorable ears, soulful eyes, and cute liddow snaggltoof. Oh man, I’m resorting to baby talk, stop me now… OK, so in a nutshell we got some cute family photos along with a romantic engagement shoot, which is no easy feat. I’m really happy with the results, and am sharing my favorites with you below. Enjoy!

Oh elopements, how I love thee – you are a quick and intimate ceremony and about two hours of mellow shooting with two lovers and no distractions. I am photo-selfish, and can’t help but be disappointed when my favorite photos from a wedding day (the bride and groom of course) get minimized to the last 5 minutes of the cocktail hour. There needs to be a little downtime in the day, a time for the couple to reflect on their new union, and to just experience the moment. And during an elopement, there’s plenty of room for that to happen. I met Nikki and Glenn at the Old Monterey Inn, a historic building turned B&B with the most amazing (and hidden) landscaping. I was able to capture a few getting ready photos, then it was just me, the couple, Nikki’s parents, and the officiant. Clean, simple, intimate, and memorable. Afterwards, we explored the property for photo ops – including the handsome dark interior of the inn itself. Towards the end of our time together, we whisked off to Lover’s Point, the popular green lawn and boulder park in Monterey. Thing is, though, it’s December – think bone-chilly and very windy at the coast. At the inn, we were protected from the weather, but here we were open to the elements. I was unable to feel my hands after a few minutes, but remembering I wasn’t the one wearing a dress, I manned up and got productive. I started barking orders like a Hollywood Director two weeks behind schedule. I don’t think I was being mean, but man we got our shots and got out. And looking at the photos, you wouldn’t know we were all freezing our asses off. Thanks for team effort guys, you totally rocked it. My favorite photos are below…

These are multiple exposure HDR photos I took of the interior area of Stanford’s newest dining hall. Many photographers overdo the HDR “look” – I try to make it look as natural as possible, without showing excess detail in the shadows and highlights. My goal is to have architectural photos look as my eye sees them in person. Here’s my favorites below.

I had the pleasure of taking some photos of the culinary creations of Stanford University’s fine chefs – all morning long they slaved away in their new campus kitchen, and prepared some awesome looking (and tasty) dishes. Here’s a few of my favorites…

It was cold and windy and late November when I met up with Carly and Josué for their engagement shoot at Fort Point in San Francisco. It’s a really old military building, right at the base of the Golden Gate – and adjacent to the turbulent waters of the bay. This was a new location for me, and I was amazed at the view of the Golden Gate Bridge the location offered. Of course you pay for it one way or another, and suffering the weather was our payment for the opportunity to experience the man-made and natural beauty. These two lovebirds were total naturals – and it didn’t take much coaxing to get them to get all cuddly. After we shot for an hour or so, we drove to our next location, the Palace of Fine Arts. There are so many architectural opportunities here – the majestic columns soaring into the sky are a scene to behold. It was less windy there, but still pretty cold. Carly and Josué did great, though, and I feel like we got just the right amount of photos. Speaking of which, check out my favorites from their e-session below!
