When I take an individual’s portrait for business purposes, I try to find out exactly how they intend to use the photos. Usually it’s for their LinkedIn profile or their professional website. However, sometimes they’d also like a couple more casual portraits for dating sites or other uses – so my goal is always to provide options for my clients – both in what they choose to wear as well as the environment we shoot in. Because I travel to my client’s homes, businesses, or other private or public locations – I am flexible enough to offer diversity and options to my clients.
In Kirsten’s case, she didn’t need photos for a dating site (I photographed her wedding at the Monterey Bay Aquarium), but she did need some headshots for LinkedIn. We started with a more traditional portrait with a neutral wall in her home, then went to a nearby park in Mountain View to take some more photos with a natural (but subtle) backdrop. Because I used the same off-camera lighting equipment for both indoor and outdoor locations, the photos have a consistent look and feel. Personally I love the candid nature of the outdoor shot (and the slight breeze did some fun things with her hair) – but like I said, it’s great to have options for your business portraits as you never know how you’ll need them in the future.
