Ah, my weakness – food photography. I love hanging out in the kitchen with the chef and all the crew that make the restaurant run like a well-tuned machine. Usually I shoot in the public restaurant area, but since The Westin’s former restaurant Ducca is getting a facelift and rebranding (new name is Maso, a clever wordplay on Soma, as in SOMA district), I shot everything in the kitchen area. A steady stream of curious kitchen staff hovered around my mini-studio, as curious about the new dishes the chef had come up with as they were about the photos themselves. I’d hear things like “Oh, that one is going to be popular” or, “I can’t wait to make that!” This was a more extensive food shoot than usual, I believe we shot 15 separate appetizers and entrees, and according to Executive Chef John Hart, that’s just the tip of the iceberg for the new menu. I’m sorry I don’t have descriptions for these, they probably don’t even exist yet. But I thought I’d share a few of my favorite photos from the food photography session for you. Enjoy, and sorry if I spoiled your lunch!
