Okay, where do I begin… Well, I met Jen Kwapinski, owner of Jen’s Cakes, a few months ago at a networking event at Morton’s Steakhouse in San Jose. She had some amazing cupcakes for people to enjoy – and I fell in love with her red velvet. We got to know each other a little, and I suggested we do a maternity shoot when she was a little further along. We kept in touch, and eventually set a date once she swelled to the appropriate dimensions (ha!). I met Jen, her husband Anthony and 22mo daughter Caeden at the Asiel Design warehouse in San Jose. Jen knows the owners so we were able to have full after-hours access to the joint. Any photographer that digs the rusted-corrogated-metal-old-deteriorating-wood-flaking-faded-paint-look would absolutely die if they shot there. You could do 100 senior portrait sessions and still have variety. And the place is filled with all kinds of cool props that Asiel Design use to decorate their amazing weddings.
Back to the shoot – Jen brought several cool outfits and a few props – funky jewelry and a little electric guitar (they’re having a boy). Jen isn’t a girly-girl, so she wanted to take a different approach to her maternity photos. When she mentioned the giant black throne with big skulls on the armrests, I knew I was in for an exciting shoot. Enjoy my favorites in the slideshow below, set to a little Goo Goo Dolls music.
